Rezeta

This film is about an Albanian model who is beginning her career abroad, set against the backdrop of the city landscape in Mexico. Her free spirited life style shown at the beginning of the film seems to encompass all areas of her life, including her romantic relations. However, her blossoming friendship with a punk-rocker musician change her in ways that even she could not have seen.

The setting of Mexico city beautifully complements the rugged time sequences of the main character's journey and the relationship between Rezeta and her live-in boyfriend. Although it can sometimes be a bit confusing to know how much time has passed, Rezeta's increasing fluency in Spanish and her boyfriend's changing appearance is always a good clue.

Some may argue that the film is too choppy to really understand the full depth of the characters let alone their romance. But I don't really think the film is about that. Sometimes time and perspective can get away from you when you plunge into an all consuming relationship, and the bitterness of the demise is all you can remember.

Rezeta (Rezeta Veliu) is an Albanian (well, Kosovoan) model looking for more opportunities and advancements in her career in México, but, more so, adventure. Once she's there, she befriends thasher/hesher/metalhead/punker Alex (Roger Mendoza) as a bit of guide for the city she's in, who also helps her learn español. Rezeta—very much a free spirit—engages in a couple sexual exploits with one of her photographers (an ace in bed) and a random, "hippie" intellectual (not so much). On a getaway with a couple of her model friends, to which she also brings Alex, she drunkenly tries to kiss him, much to his surprise and subsequent abashment (read: Why would a model want me?). She pushes forth with her feelings for him despite his cerebral resistance, and the two begin an unlikely romance. As the two imbibe each other into each other's lives, however, their separate lifestyles and personalities are pushed to their limits; Alex, an antisocial punk, faces frustration before Rezeta's social character and tendencies, and must confront her sexualized image within her cliques. This film aptly deconstructs the stigmas and sexual allure of varying social types, underscored by the palpable class différance of México. Some of Rezeta's subject matter comes across as banal, namely her gallivanting in her capacity and comportment as a model, but it defines her character and the tension with Alex later on in the film. It was enjoyable but not superbly memorable.

It was an okay movie. Rezeta's personality was well developed in the movie. She does not care and she just want to enjoy the moment. She is very European and Mexican men do not accept her attitude at the end. I can see their culture differences affect their relationship and the movie shows their frustration very well. I wanted to see more Mexico city, though. Rezeta was new to the country, so movie could have shown more Rezeta encountering new places, different customs, and foods. It was a good story and put things together well, but I wanted to see more detailed.
