A heartfelt documentary about a side of pottery you never see

Having grown up in the artist community I could easily relate to the raw joy and pain the main character shows us on his journey for the big kiln fire. The pacing is wonderful - allowing you to absorb emotions and feel like you're there with the crew. It offers wonderful insight of an art form most people don't know about. Lovely, heartfelt and compelling. I hope everyone watches this while drinking out of the mug they got at the last craft fair - to truly appreciate the work that went into it. Nicely shot and cozy setting - makes you want to visit the pottery shop. Characters are endearing and passionate about their work. Gives you a new perspective and appreciation for the work that goes into art that we sometimes see as a mug or bowl or dish. There are thoughtful wonderful people behind each and every piece of pottery in our homes.

The life of an artist

I loved this exploration of why an artist would take the road with more hurdles and bumps and creates a community in the process. We meet Kevin Crow, and learn his story.

We get to visit his pottery studio where he shares his journey to create a life that allows one to be an artist, to create art that is authentic, and to create a community of like minded artists. And the pottery beautiful!

This film gives the viewer a window into understanding the basics of wood fired pottery, and shows us the complexities involved. Kevin Crow makes it look easy, and his pottery is absolutely beautiful but we also learn that there are many unpredictable factors in wood firing, and how one must prepare as best as one can, but then let go, and let the dynamic forces work their magic. Bravo!

Inspiring

This is an interesting film. It is a beautiful film to watch. Warm & inviting like meeting new friends through old friends.

It's also a movie about making beautiful art - pottery.

So you will love if if you like great films and if you love pottery.

By the end you must own a piece of Kevin's work - in my case it's to remind me of how beautiful the film was. It's one big circle!

This documentary has a story about art being made the old fashioned way with fire and love. It's about an lonesome art and artist that has created a way to need people to make the art work. It's about relationships, creativity, love and all the good stuff life is about.

Trust me - you'll love this film!

Didn't expect a feature length documentary about pottery to be so riveting!

"Out of the Fire" is a wonderful documentary that takes you inside a community of potters. By the end, you'll find yourself rooting for these passionate characters and hoping their firing process goes well. The feature does a great job weaving sound bites in with b-roll, mixing emotional beats with technical details, and tying it all together with music.

I love documentaries about craftspeople, and found it quite interesting to learn about their art and the elaborate process of running a wood burning kiln. The narrative structure is based around an elaborate firing process, building up to final reveal that contains a good deal of suspense.

I highly recommend this documentary, not just to people interested in pottery, but to anyone who likes good stories with interesting characters.

So Beautiful

Courtenay Singer did such an amazing job in journey of clay from a wet and soft substance into a formed stone. All of which under the masterful guidance of the master potter, Kevin Crowe. Not only is there the shaping of the clay, but there is also the tender story of the shaping of the apprentice, Krista Loomans. Through is loving care both clay and apprentice are shaped into a more beautiful form.

Like the clay, Krista Loomans also went through the fires of life. She tells her story of the loss of her father and how Kevin Crowe becomes that father figure at a critical time of her life.

I loved this film. Thank you for bringing Out of the Fire to life.
