Student filmmaker Eddie Yellin does it again with another heart thumping short thriller. In his latest film "Pickle" Yellin demonstrates yet again his unique talent for leaving us on the edge of our seats, and holding our breath.
In "Pickle" Eddie gets into a taxi. The driver, well played by Isaac Mejjia, strikes up a conversation with Eddie who is clearly distracted, Eddie does his best to be polite. Eddie's girlfriend Sasha calls during the ride and angrily demands to know where Eddie is. Young Eddie seems cowed by this girl and promises her he's only minutes away. She is abrasive and even abusive to Eddie. This causes great amusement for the driver. Suddenly a grey haired man with blood stained clothes and hands jumps in the car. The man appears to be in an adrenalin fueled rage ,and is abusive to both the driver and Eddie. He demands the driver take him to his destination ASAP without stopping for anything including red lights. He speaks loudly in a word salad of disconnected thoughts and complaints. His phone rings and he gives it to Eddie to answer. The person on the other end makes death threats. The man (Paul Fisher III) is clearly frightening to the Driver and Eddie who demonstrate that fear without having to say a word. The tension is palpable. Finally the driver demands the man get out of the car. The man responds by shooting the driver in the head. Eddie runs from the car. The man gives chase. In a Kubrickesque scene reminiscent of "The Shining" Eddie runs through the streets of Tucson trying to escape this psychotic man. I won't give away the end. I'll just say it's a thrill ride. Clearly this is an excellent piece of work for such a young filmmaker. Eddie Yellin is a talent who has a very bright future ahead of him. I look forward to his next film with great anticipation.
