Standing our ground

Military humour belongs to a strange place between things that are funny and those that are not funny at all. It can be bitter, scary, brutal, or very dark,but its main task is not to be lightheartedly funny. As the heroes of this documentary say (almost all of them), humour help them to withstand all the awfulness of the wartime.

So this is definitely not a comedy, not a standup show nor a compilation of funny footage. There are some, of course, and there are some good jokes. But the main theme of the film is how humour helps the soldiers psychologically, how they use it, and how it could be a line between them and "normal" life.

It's such a humanistic and gentle film, despite of the theme. You see not brutal laughing warriors but human beings who thrive in unhuman conditions.
