Omega Rising Women of Rastafari

"Acknowledging His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I, the 1st, he has took me to a higher level, where I acknowledge God in all things."

This short documentary started slow, and it's always a little hard for me to get invested in any faith whose followers think of themselves as the "chosen people," and in this case, deify a man, King Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. Don't come for reggae music either, though we do see Judy Mowatt performing a snippet of Black Woman.

Eventually the documentary shifts away from the dogma of Rastafarianism to the struggle of women, and it felt a little like a work from Les Blank in how organic and varied the testimonials were. What comes out in a variety of ways is the discrimination within society and the movement itself. I also liked the bits referencing Marcus Garvey, those speaking to black pride and self-determination. Overall it's a modest effort, but it was nice to get a little window into this world in the 80's.
