I want to listen to the movie's last two songs EVEN MORE now, they are GORGEOUS. And I also wish the movie was 20 extra minutes longer!! But it's not just to have more fun, but to have more time for the whole premise of the movie to be fleshed-out. This feels like one of those movies where they have a LOT to say, and they manage to say it, but they're just a BIT tight on time. I've heard people wishing that the side characters were more developed-tbh, I think it makes sense that the movie is focused on Rumi, but I do feel like if the other characters got a SMIDGE more screen time (especially one specific one who we only see twice for like 10 minutes total), then there'd be time to flesh out the premise a bit more, and make their importance to the ending of the movie more impactful.
(I watched the Japanese version, so that's the context this review will be in. That means no American songs, and no rewritten plot.)
A tearjerker. Shockingly dark. Not much happens in the movie, and the plot of the movie goes in an unusual direction that confuses the intended message. But still. They started off the movie series with a loud, resounding BANG. I heard things about how this first Pokémon movie was "worse than you remember", but...no. It's most certainly not. I'm an adult, and this movie made me scared, and made tears appear in my eyes. It communicated what it wanted to say and how it wanted me to feel without using words. For what it is - a movie from a kids' franchise - it is MASTERFULLY done. I'm surprised that, despite me rating this movie as a 7, I'm having a hard time explaining exactly what felt missing to me. It's not some kind of masterclass story, and yet it delivers like one. And that's REALLY impressive.
