Seen some good reviews for this. They are wrong.
It started with a dude taking a crossbow bolt in his testicles and I thought 'okay, maybe we're in for some fun and gore' then there was about 80 minutes of boring characters, some poor dialogue, a bit of sex and a terrible fight scene.
The climax was kind of okay and we had a bit more blood and gore but honestly this was pretty lame and I was pretty bored.

If you don't mind characters who run off to investigate abandoned prisons in search of clues that may or may not be related to demonic activity in the dark, on their own, and who turn around ever so slowly every time they hear a strange noise, then this film is passable.
If however, you don't like characters who make insanely stupid decisions, tropey cliche like a husband who doesn't believe and a flashlight that loses power at the worst possible time, then this film will likely annoy you.
There is nothing surprising or original to see here. It's directed well enough and it builds the backstory competently but you will likely have seen it all before.
There have certainly been worse movies this year. So give it a go, you might enjoy it.

This might be the closest anyone has come to adapting Shelley's story. Guillermo Del Toro is probably the perfect director for a movie like this and he has created a masterpiece.
It looks and feels every bit a Guillermo Del Toro movie and every scene is shot in his unmistakable style and yet, my feeling was almost that I was watching his movie at all but rather that I was watching what Mary Shelley might have imagined when she wrote her novel.
Jacob Elordi is absolutely fantastic as the tragic and misunderstood creation of the egotistical and psychologically wayward titular doctor played brilliantly by Oscar Isaac. The supporting cast all chip in well.
I guess this is a horror and certainly death, identity and the spectrum of human nature are under the microscope but that's not new to this movie, that's the point of the novel. My overriding feeling was one of sadness. This is a tragedy in every sense of the word and this movie really does capture that beautifully.
