I can see why Rosamund Pike chose to do this movie. The premise of the plot has a nice twist. However, the failure of this movie is that it was not helmed by a brilliant director such as Martin Scorsese.
Imho, casting Nick Nolte was a tragic mistake. Nolte didn't have the gravitas to pull off being a counter point to Pike's character.
One third of the way into the movie, I stopped watching and came here to IMDB to read the comments. What I read pretty much echoed what I was feeling. So I watched the rest of the movie fast forwarding through the slow scenes.
I wouldn't recommend watching this entire movie at normal speed. But if you zip through the burdensome dialogues, the rest of the film is not that bad.
Many commentators disagree with me but I believe Pike delivers a fine performance in the pivotal ending scene. However, this film is missing the clarity of character and smoldering emotions that Brian De Palma, Ridley Scott or even David Chase would have brought to bear on the production.
Ultimately, this is a psychological horror film and had a similar potential to "Gone Girl" but missed the mark.
