A young Sandrine Bonnaire plays Mona, who has left home and lives on the road, hitchhiking, taking odd jobs and meeting all types of people. She's in rebellion with conventional society, this is quite clear, though she's also purposeless and doesn't seem to want anything from life. Doesn't seem happy at all with the life she's leading, and she only seems to enjoy herself while listening to music and smoking grass (the sacred herb). Sure, she finds some bad people once in a while, but most of the time (and this surprised me, 'cause i always thought life on the streets was tougher), people are kind and generous to her, like the hippie farmer, the Tunisian worker and the tree woman.
Of course, this is a good film, as others i've seen from Varda, but i think it's lack of sentimentality prevented me from liking it more. The main character is aloof and enigmatic, and, though she meets many people, doesn't seem to care or to connect with anyone on an emotional level. (6/10)

The "movie" itself looks like crap, with that unremarkable, mediocre, ordinary looking cinematography. The "director" tries to be "funny" but the humor is just dismal and out of place; just nothing works in this attempt at a film.
It's irrelevant talking about the slow (or fast) pacing of a "movie" such as this thing, as both the content and form are garbage. I don't mind if a director shows misanthropy or hatred in a movie, as long as this is made with some intelligence and talent, which is not remotely the case in this poor excuse of a film. I was only offended by the real animal killings in "weekend", but the rest of the movie didn't irritate me in the least. This is because EVERYTHING here looks 100% unconvincing and made in a sloppy way.
This really doesn't even feel like a movie, but rather the caricature of a movie. Not to mention the absurd and silly politics of Godard, playing the "rebel" once again, which really becomes tiresome and a cliché. But thankfully, all these attempts at radical left wing crime and phoniness were rebutted by history back in 1989. (2/10)

Ages since i watched this movie for the first time; i didn't remember how good it was.
Cotten was a great actor (who cares he never won an "oscar"), and this film shows it. Marilyn is also quite effective as the "femme fatale", and that wonderful photography of nature (the rainbows!).
It's a doomed tale of obsession, a mentally unstable man who has a not-too-faithful wife...and things get complicated when they befriend a young couple. This movie works on all levels, as film noir, as a drama, thriller, melodrama, etc. My only complain was that maybe the central "twist" of the story was a bit predictable. But his is a great film, nonetheless. (8/10)
