This film no doubt is source material for the premise of Austin Powers' third installation, namely the issue of genealogy linking Bond and Blofeld. Outside of that, Goldmember is its own film outside of the Bond universe. George isn't every woman's dream compared to Sean and it's unfortunate for him to follow immediately after (Sean). Overall, On Her Majesty's Secret Service is a good movie telling a story. Again it's unfortunate for George to be given this series as it didn't have much of the silly and sophisticated things you'd expect from a Bond film. No gadgetry, no impossible near death Houdini escapes, no major gunfight. It did however had the traditional punchlines and gorgeous women. There is a scene with the women that is so passe' that it is obscenely and comically offensive. You can only laugh in disbelief. The Asian woman eating a bowl of rice with chopsticks, the black woman eating bananas, the Indian woman eating nan bread, and the white woman eating chicken. Having aired my grievance, they should keep this on reprints (not cut out) as it shows how far we have grown. By now nothing is a spoiler but I will refrain from giving away much else just out of good habit. I recommend a watch for any Bond enthusiasts. No one can match Sean's command, Craig's grit, or Roger's charisma but no one can deny George is a Bond. A name immortalized along with the likes of Timothy and Pierce.
Much like the film, I focused on the visuals over substance that I could have extracted by reading reviews before seeing this old movie. I thought it was suspenseful but I also thought it was anti climactic once they revealed supernatural powers. I found myself laughing often as I think horror films are unintentionally humorous. Comical that the fact that the book seems to be 500 pages, yet when Depp and the other characters studies them they only look at the engraved images. Understandable; when I was young and bought comics I only look at the drawings too. There is a lot to digest in terms of symbolism and psychological treatment parallel to modern life which many reviewers have already pointed out so I will refrain from being redundant. At any rate, the film was entertaining on the ten scale as a five - had it not been for the luxury of Fast-forwarding the slow scenes, I probably would have scored this lower.
For a heist movie, this seems to move real slow. Character development are important but film maker seem to not care about run time. If you like Halsey, she makes an appearance early for a short time then disappears until much later then you get a lot of. This film conceptually sound good but it is only (small) part heist. Not even half way through I've already lost interest. I stuck it out and luckily the kid and ghost face aka Henry scene kept me a little invested how the movie progresses. In my opinion the character Henry Alvin made this film tolerable. Halsey did good (I think this is her film debut) acting out her parts. The film is mostly drama and I realized this after much given thought. The end is perfect as it didn't fall into the trappings of a feel good film - the reincarnation nonsense was resoundingly rejected by the true adult in this film. The ending makes perfect sense also because Halsey's character finally realizes true wealth. What would make this film score higher than my six out of ten rating is if they had less of that excruciatingly slow scenes (yes, multiple) with hefty lefty cowboy and Sydney's character.
