Of the infamous 1990 movie era the year 1999 was its conclusion and what a conclusion it has been. You had the most anticipated movie of all time Star Wars Episode I, there was Fight Club, Matrix, The Green Mile and American Beauty. It was also the year one of the greatest directors of all time passed away. Stanley Kubrick had one last movie for us. Eyes Wide Shut is one of his best, maybe the best.
Tom Cruise had the honor to work with the maestro and I think he did not regret that. In this 2 hours 40 minutes erotic thriller underlayed with the Kubrickesque style classical music and the mysterious, weird story he could show everything he has. By all his action movies most people forget about his skills as an actor. This movie shows he is one of the best.
A movie like that wouldn't be made today, and couldn't be made today either. Because todays society is far away from the charm of the 90s. The fashion, the hairstyles, the cars. Everything superior to today. And the laissez-faire the elegance of this decade. Every woman in that movie looks one thousand times better than todays women. No piercings, no tattoos, no ridiculous make-up. No feministic ideologies. Just women.
The last sentence of this movie says it all. Kubrick was a genius.
