A Christmas Carol is one of my favorite stories ever told and I enjoy so many of the adaptations we've gotten over the years. "Spirited" is a unique and refreshing take on the story, both in looking at the story from the spirit's perspective and the ultimate theme that don't completely change in just one night, but one night *could* start a person on a better path.
Unfortunately, the decision to make this a full blown broadway-style musical causes the narrative to be clunky and overcomplicated. To really make this work, the songs need to be great and every song in the first two acts sound almost identical and all of them have terrible lyrics. The choreography and camera work break the immersion of a movie and make it suddenly feel like a stage production with no narrative reason. Sometimes specific people are referenced as if the "spirits" are running the production, but at other times you'll find everyday people get up and start singing and dancing. There's even a point early on when the characters are already tired of the musical numbers. We don't really know if it's part of the joke or if it's meant to be serious. Will, Ryan and others are decent enough singers but not mesmerizing. None of these points would mean as much if the songs were good.
There is so much about this movie I wanted to like. Reynolds and Ferrel are both great on screen and in these characters. The narrative is fresh and features good plot twists. This was truly a remarkable idea, but the musical numbers are too frequent, oddly timed and the story grinds to a halt every time. I found myself fast forwarding through all but the final number and the reprise.

There is a appealing message underneath the story that takes too long to show itself. A story of how divorce impacts a family wrapped up in a vaguely medieval fantasy kingdom that completely stops world building half way through the movie. There are no subplots to move the story along and the stakes never feel particularly dire.
The music is probably the most annoying part of the movie. The songs are just characters singing out their inner monologue with no real structure or melody, and they're over quickly. Half way through the movie I was sick of the musical breaks that kept interrupting the action.
