For (Beep’s) Sake! They Made a Remake? Did You Even Know? Do You Even Care? Did You Even Notice?
Hollywood. Gone is creativity, and along with it, the daring, bold, adventurous risk-taking and the new. Now replaced with stifling fear. Fear of offending anyone or of venturing out there untethered with something completely unknown and unfamiliar and untested. Instead, we get the restarts, retreads and the rehashed. Some studios are so scared, if it’s not a sequel, it’s a live action adaptation of their extensively viewed animated films. Yawn. But there are also beloved existing films that unbelievably the studios have actually gone back and tried to relaunch (like this new The Crow out now, August 2024) and then you blink and miss it, forget about it, and ex post facto, you’re like, oh yeeeah, they did try to redo that, didn’t they? Here’s a list of a few that I’ve actually seen in theaters, and some that I haven’t ever seen and probably never will. If you actually watch any of these titles don’t be surprised if tears seep your popcorn from your own ducts and you sob aloud, “Where are all of today’s visionary forward-looking filmmakers, and where are the studios willing to back them?” And it echoes loudly in your living room.
