Top 10 Overrated Sequels

Here's where I lose any friends I had here. I just don't get it. It's dressed up as a Mad Max movie, but it never feels like one to me. It has no soul. In fact, it has very little of anything besides garish colour and loud noises. Certainly not much of a plot. Or any performances to write home about. Sure, we've all heard what spectacular action sequences it has. Tell me what your favourite one was though. Can one even be separated from the general blur that makes up the entire thing? There's not a memorable set piece or a pivotal moment or even any great lines to quote. It's the cinematic equivalent of smearing bright primary-coloured paint on a canvas and hanging it in a gallery to be called a brilliant visionary. And I love Mad Max; it's one of my favourite movie series. But that's why this one hurts so much. It's hyped to oblivion and back and it does not deliver, not for this fan.

Man, it's bad. Where the original movie is tense, clever, believable and genuinely frightening, this one reverses all those qualities and gives us a goofy, brainless mockery of that classic. It's downright sad how quickly this series went down the drain. And yet you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn't praise this to the moon and beyond, even calling it the greatest sequel in history. What movie are they watching?

This movie is nothing so much as an insult to the quality of the first Superman. The acting is bad, the special effects are laughable and the comic moments are horrifically misplaced. Not only that, but without spoiling anything, a certain choice is made by Superman which is so out of character as to feel like a downright betrayal. And yet you'll more often than not see it talked about as the best in the series and even sometimes the best movie ever based on a DC Comics character. Unbelievable.

It's hard to quite pinpoint what I so dislike. Somehow the main human stars really take me out of it. Part of the magic of the Muppets is the "live" cast really believing in the characters, which Segel and Adams just don't pull off to my satisfaction. They're both clearly "in on the joke," which then means that there is no joke. Chris Cooper is also surprisingly lackluster, which leaves it without a memorable villain. Very disappointing and it's taken me several tries to watch the whole thing, which can't be said about any of the others on this list. Luckily, something much better was on the horizon.

Of all the movies that never needed to exist, this one needed to the least. A completely superfluous film filled with forgettable characters to provide a backstory for something that never required an explanation.

This one is a textbook example. Really, at this point it's a sacred cow. I've heard over and over how the first two Godfathers are the best movies ever made. What no one seems to be able to really tell me is why.

There are things about this movie that irritate me (the abrupt change in tone and style compared to its predecessors and the omission of crucial information from the book), but more than that, I'm including it because of the number of times I've seen the opinion that this one is the moment when the series started to be of a high quality for the first time. I couldn't disagree more; I love those first two.

This one seems to be genuinely beloved and not just critically revered. I'm baffled by the amount of praise for this movie that, to my way of thinking, is just a reheated version of GoldenEye. But then, I never got the outpouring of love for the Craig-era movies. Just not my thing, I guess.

A lifeless performance as a sadistic, selfish, entitled and downright detestable main character makes for one of the worst protagonists in recent memory.

Just a painfully tacky movie with a script full of embarrassing clichés that feels like either a first draft or an outright parody. I think the fanfare over this movie had everything to do with goodwill from the fans who have such affection for the original that there was a certain willingness to forgive what we actually ended up with.
