In researching the ten percent Native American blood in father's family history, he discovered some very strange associations on his mother's side of the family. The first surprise was that he is the sixth cousin of James Dean, the actor. But further research showed his mother's side of the family, the "Dean" family, also lists cousins such as Jane Austen, John Steinbeck, DH Lawrence, Norman Rockwell, John Wayne, Shirley Temple, President Chester A. Arthur, several First Ladies, and Mary Walker, the first woman to be awarded a Medal of Honor (American Civil War; rescinded by congress, restored by Presidential decree).
