Underwent surgery to remove a tumor from her breast [July 13, 2009]. Later had a mastectomy.

One of her closest friends is her Sala de urgencias (1994) co-star, Parminder Nagra. Maura officiated at Parminder's wedding in January 2009.

Was cast in the role of Nurse Abigail 'Abby' Lockhart in Sala de urgencias (1994), without an audition.

Had to leave Parenthood (2010) after discovering she had breast cancer. Promotional items with Maura were already released by NBC to promote the show in 2009 and production had to be pushed back, because of Maura's leave. She was eventually replaced by Lauren Graham.

Maura was added to the cast of NewsRadio (1995) the day before they shot the pilot.

On Last Call with Carson Daly (2002), she admitted that she was fired from the television show ¡Ay! cómo duele crecer (1985). The show was supposed to have an episode arc in Europe, but the idea was scrapped when Kirk Cameron expressed a fear of flying.

In the NewsRadio (1995) episode "Presence", her character "Lisa Miller" is a math whiz who learns to play poker to win back Bill (Phil Hartman) after their boss "Jimmy James" (Stephen Root) loses Bill in an inter-station poker game. In real life, Tierney won the 2004 (Season 2) Celebrity Poker Showdown (2003), hosted by Dave Foley. Tierney defeated Lauren Graham at the final table. Foley, Graham and Tierney all appeared in NewsRadio (1995).

While being interviewed on Irish chat show Tubridy Tonight (2004), Maura admitted that she has had Botox although she did not like the experience. (February 2009).

On Last Call with Carson Daly (2002), she stated that she and her husband Billy Morrissette were fired from a sitcom known as The Ralph Macchio Project.

In an interview Tierney was asked who should play her if her life story movie was ever made. She said her Newsradio co-star Dave Foley would be best as he was funny and looked great in a dress.

Owns a black pug, with her husband Billy Morrissette, named Rose- Kennedy. They take her everywhere with them.

In a magazine interview several years after the show Newsradio ended, cast members talked about how they heard the news of Phil Hartman's tragic murder. Maura Tierney recalled that she was in New York shooting a movie and heard the news from the radio of a taxi she was in.

(August 27, 2018) She was riding her bike late morning in Los Angeles when she was involved in an accident. A car hit her back tire, which caused her to fall to the ground. After she was placed in a neck brace and put on a stretcher, Tierney was transported via ambulance to a hospital. An LAPD media relations officer confirmed that the driver involved was not believed to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Maura was released from the hospital with no major injuries later that day.
