Owen was a member of Pillory Theatre for three years, a small experimental troupe inspired by the work of Jerzy Grotowski. In 1969, while Poland was still behind the 'Iron Curtain' Owen traveled with Pillory to perform in Il Miedzynarodowy Festiwal Festiwali Teatrow Studenckich in Grotowski's Wroclaw, Poland.
