Rebecca Hanser is a director, writer, producer and actress for film, theatre and mocap based in London. She is known for the feature films Portal to the Abyss (2024), Parasitus (2021), Blade of the Assassin (2021) and the short films Third Life Crisis (2023), the award-winning Ghosted (2022) and A Tribute to Frida (2021). Her work also includes the BAFTA-award winning Netflix tv-series The Witcher Season 3 awarded for Best Special, Visual and Graphic effects.
At an early age, she already had a love for films and says she learned English by "simply watching a lot of movies". The acting bug only kicked in at a much later age as she developed a passion for writing. She went off to pursue an impressive academic career before giving in to acting and studied International Business Management at The Hague University (BSc) and Anthropology and Journalism (MA) at the renowned Leiden University. Surviving college through jobs in modeling and hospitality, she says that studying gave her the opportunity to travel the world, and as a result she speaks several languages including Spanish, Portuguese, German and French, in addition to her native Dutch and English.
She started growing more interest in acting and after several successful Dutch film projects like Poolshoogte (2014), she moved to London to train at the prestigious Drama Centre London to obtain her third master degree in screen acting (MA). As the classes mixed actor students with director students, this gave her a taste of work behind the camera. During this period she also joined theatre company The People's Company as an in-house cast member and was featured in one of their biggest productions Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights Dream (2019) taking on the role of fairy queen Titania in collaboration with the Southwark Playhouse. She also performed on stage and toured around the UK with the Extreme Improv Comedy Club, directed by David Pustansky. It was around this time that she also became passionate about Flamenco dance which led to the short documentary Andalusia (2018). The latest stage performance was for the show "Pigs" produced by SweinHaus and took place at the Cockpit Theatre in London.
After being featured in the short film Before You Were Born (2017) she also started training in filmmaking, screenwriting, editing and producing and soon wrote and co-produced projects like Fallen from Grace (2018). The horror film projects including Panic (2019) and Tormented (2019) became successful hits on London's film festival scene and even appraised by the Raindance Film Festival. Hanser is also active in Martial Arts (Taekwondo, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing), gymnastics and dance (contemporary) and is known for being a physical actress with expertise in stage and screen combat and stunt performance.
She kicked off her career as a director with the short film A Tribute to Frida (2021) which she directed, wrote, edited and performed herself. The concept of self-shooting was going to be a pivotal foundation for her own production company Visualise Productions. After having gained work experience in VFX coordination at post-production houses MPC/The Mill and Cinesite, obtaining TV credits for Netflix's The Witcher Season 3, and the movies The Family Plan and The Union, she decided to entirely focus on directing, writing, filmmaking, producing and performing, anchoring Visualise Productions as the center of her work. The most recent work entirely produced and directed by Hanser is Third Life Crisis.
