France and Germany have embraced foreign languages at the 97th Academy Awards, since the films that represent them at the Best International Film are not spoken in the official language of their country.
France is nominated for
Emilia Pérez (2024), spoken in Spanish, while Germany is in contention with
La semilla del fruto sagrado (2024), spoken in Persian.
It is not the first time in history this has happened, as since the 31st Oscar ceremony several countries have chosen films in languages associated to other places in the world.
Which Best International Film nominee spoken in a different language from the country that submitted it is your favorite?
