The "Four-Billing" Test
It's not exactly the Bechdel test , but even the most arbitrary parameter can sometimes provide interesting insights. Let's call it the "Four-Billing" test for the sake of giving it a name. The following films have two things in common: they were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar and out of the 4 first credited cast-members, at least 3 are female (or 3 out of 5 given that the fifth one was nominated for an Oscar). 33 Best Picture nominees seem to pass the "Four-Billing" test for women, 8 of them were released in the past 10 years. Which one is your favorite? After voting, you might discuss the list here Oscar nominee OSCAR WINNER
Movies I Wish Roger Ebert Reviewed
During his final years, legendary four-star critic Roger Ebert became both more prolific and selective: he reviewed movies he wished to see, but it didn't diminish the quantitative value of his writings just as disease and a permanent loss of voice didn't diminish their qualitative merit. You could agree or disagree with him, you would always enjoy his writing. Thumbs down on that sad day of April 4, 2013 when Ebert left the world, an unparalleled legacy and also a taste of deception because we knew there were many great movies and classics to come, movies he would have enjoyed, some even more at the twilight of his life, movies from directors he respected and admired... but that he would never review, forever. Which of these movies released less than a year after his death or at his lifetime but that (strangely enough) he didn't review, would you have most loved to see reviewed by the late Roger Ebert? After voting, you might discuss the list here (this poll adresses those who liked to know Ebert's take on a film before or after watching it, not everyone was or is still addicted to his website, if that's the case, the last option is for you)

Top Ten Anticipated Films at Toronto
Whether they've already debuted at Venice, Telluride or Harvey Weinstein's movie grotto (face it, he must have one) these are the films that have to be seen at Toronto to consider your attendance a success. Oscar Best Picture Nominees and Women
Much has been said about the absence of racial diversity in Oscar nominees over the years. Fortunately, the 2017 Oscars did a much better job recognizing the accomplishments of minorities. What about women in movies, though? The Bechdel Test measures the presence of women in film. It tests a very low bar and yet many movies fail it. The criteria: 1) Are at least two women (named characters) in it? 2) Do they talk to each other?... 3) About something other than a man? Below are the nominees for the Best Picture Oscar from 2012 - 2017, that pass the Bechdel Test (27 out of 54 films passed and most just barely). Some, it could be and often is argued, pass the test only by "the letter of the law," rather than the broader intention: Are empowered women represented in the film? Which nominated film below do you think passes the spirit of the Bechdel Test the best? Discuss here.
