Favorite Oscar Best Picture Sequel Nominee?

In January 2025, Duna: Parte Dos (2024) secured a Oscar Best Picture nomination for the 97th Academy Awards. In doing so, it became the tenth film to secure a nomination as an "official" sequel to a prior franchise movie. While not "official" sequels, two other films, El silencio de los inocentes (1991) and Cartas desde Iwo Jima (2006) have strong ties to a preceding film and, if included in the group, would bring the total to twerlve Best Picture nominees with sequel, prequel, or companion distinctions.
