We Make Movies

Light-hearted comedy about the making of an indie film from inception to release. Shooting style definitely indie, but it feels right for this style of behind-the-scenes 'The Office'-esque film. Really great comedic ideas in here. Definitely a fun watch, especially if you have any experience in filmmaking.

I'm about twice the age of these filmmakers and with an age difference that large, humor usually gets lost in the translation. But I have to give it to them- they managed to pull off something really funny even when "budget challenged". The amateur filmmaking is what makes it funny- a "gaffer" swinging around huge living room lamp, the director explaining that he thinks a gaffer is someone who lightens up the atmosphere of a film set, Mom bringing a tray of cupcakes into the garage where they are shooting, and "craft services" ALWAYS being frozen corn dogs. I especially liked the "ac-TOR" (recruited from the multiplex due to his cinema experience) insisting on a trailer and being provided a U-Haul in the driveway. Anyone who has ever tried to make a film on the cheap can identify and will get a lot of laughs out of this one.

"We Make Movies" is a very funny satire of making movies "gorilla"-style. My husband, son and I have encountered similar situations on student films our son has made and low-budget thrillers we made when we were younger. The surprise footage that runs over the tail credits is especially charming. In the long run, this is not only a parody of filmmaking but also a toast to lifelong friendships, the kind only conspiracy to commit lunacy can inspire.

Who likes making movies? These guys do!

If you have ever been interested or involved in making films then you will appreciate this fun and humorous documentary style film following a group of friends trying to make a low budget film for their towns, Boehring (pronounced 'boring'), summer film festival.

To make it clear what you are in for watching, this is not a large budget film. It is shot in a documentary style coming with the production value on film that is to be expected in this style of film but I implore you, it should not stop you watching this film.. Its clear this is an artistic choice made to really make you feel like you are truly following people making a movie.

So why should you watch 'We Make Movies'?

First of all let me introduce you to the cast:

Stevphen - MATT TORY Donny - JORDAN HOPEWELL Garth - JONATHAN HOLMES Jessica - ANNE CROCKETT Leonard - ZACK SLORT All of these actors really do play their parts well helping you really to get involved with each of their journeys during the production of 'A New Don'. Some of the character choices were more extreme than others but they all complimented and brought something to the dynamics of the group that really is engaging. From the over confident Director played by Matt Tory to the Method actor 'Star' played by Zack Slort down to my personal favourite character the naive Donny played by Jordan Hopewell who provides moments that really do leave you with a nurturing soft spot for him.

So what about the story? Presented in an awkward comedic style resembling that of Ricky Gervais in 'The Office', this story carries a lot of laugh out loud moments, cringeworthy moments that you can't help but watch and mixes in some serious moments to break up the comedy and keep the story moving and the audience engaged.

The film is written well and is not a fast paced film but it doesn't need to be. Its intimate at points and I know I personally can relate to real moments on set for a lot of these scenes! Scarily accurate in some cases...

Overall, I would recommend this light film as one worth watching if you want a giggle. Its not going to be the next break the bank Hollywood blockbuster film but its not trying to be. For what its supposed to be, something fun, it delivers well and keeps you entertained. Unsure about it, give it a try, I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised.

WE MAKE MOVIES is a very funny and sarcastic take on indie filmmakers and filmmaking in general! Being an indie filmmaker myself, I laughed out loud many times, recognizing moments from my own journey in this film. I've been the guy trying to get the "big names" to "take the festivals by storm" many times, proving that life imitates art, or vice versa. At the end of the day, We Make Movies is full of heart and genuine laughs. It's well-made and uses it's budgetary restrictions to it's advantage concentrating on good performances and good-old-fashioned story- telling. Bravo!
