Rainmaker

I've never read the book or seen the movie and it seems like most of the reviewers are basing the show on them. I think it's a very interesting thriller and can't wait for it to continue. Critics can go screw themselves. There are a ton of hit shows that "critics" don't like. Usually if a critic hates it, it's actually a good show.

It's getting good! Never mind the naysayers

I will admit that it started a slow and a bit silly giving it has elements of young love & "your first real world job" but it has grown quickly into Grisham quality work.

Everyone should remember that the movie version of "The Rainmaker" wasn't that hot to begin with.

I'm on board & hope it gets another season. Just get through the first 3 episodes the. It gets great!

Not a great pilot, but decent

To be honest, I don't understand all these crazy reviews of 1 or 10 stars after just 1 episode.

The pilot was in my opinion decent - not as terrible or amazing as so many reviews suggest. I enjoyed it for now and it was interesting enough that I will watch at least a couple more episodes to form a proper opinion. So we'll see how the story develops. For me the pilot was somewhere between a 6 or 7 rating, but I hate all the negativity and bumped it up for now, hoping the series will improve in the next episodes. Depending on how this goes, I will probably amend my rating though.

Interesting start...

Don't listen to the first reviewer.

I loved the pilot to be honest. It was a bit messy with multiple plotlines that kept me interested. The acting was decent. I didn't notice too much that was distracting.

Madison, Milo, Wade, and Lana were actually why I began watching this. I love the cast sm already. Obviously, It's not oscar worthy at least judging by the first episode but it has potential.

I also love the soundtrack and cinematography. Btw, I don't even like lawyer shows that much so this was a surprise. Other than that don't anything else to say, I'm super excited for what comes next!

Great Promise

I'm so glad I didn't take to heart the reviews during the press days. I had read about 3-4 negative or not so positive.

I initially came early into the project when it was announced that Lana Parrilla was added to the cast. Once I saw that PJ was also in the cast, I got even more excited. I think some folks would be upset to find out that the series is going to be loosely based on the book, but I am glad that it's not. The book wasn't that great- the main action and interesting part wasn't until the last 150 pages. So it's awesome that the series will be broadening and expanding this Rainmaker world. I'm also glad that Bruiser and Sarah are being given a backstory and more involvement into the plot as opposed to the book. Bruiser is barely in the book and Sarah was only mentioned twice in passing. So to see the cast be more diverse and not so male focused is a breath of fresh air. It also helps when showcasing how it is being a woman in a male dominated industry, such as in the world of law.

It's actually decent

I've always been a big fan of John Grisham, rainmaker was a great book, the movie was decent, but the start of this show I've actually liked more than the movie. I had low hopes going into it but it's kept me entertained so far. The acting could be better so could the writing, but that's cable tv for you nowadays. All in all, if it stays on track I'll be a fan. Good stuff.

Watchable But Not Extraordinary

With the pedigree from a semi-successful Francis Ford Coppola film and slightly more popular source material, The Rainmaker attempts to transcend the pedigree of a straight-up legal serial.

In order to execute this strategy, there's a jumble of serialized plots backing the central case -- a psychotic killer kidnapping a witness, a young couple navigating the ethics of cohabitating and being on opposing sides of a case, a domestic abuse victim -- all competing for screen time. While each thread has its moments, these threads. Aren't acting in complimentary ways towards a strong central story [Disclaimer: so far, I am six episodes in].

Lana Parilla and John Slattery play the large-than-life id-driven bosses as Jocelyn "Bruiser" Stone and Leo Drummond. These are the kind of edgy anti-heroes we've grown accustomed to on legal procedurals like Suits or The Good Wife. They both skate on the edge of journalistic ethics in order to win and the Bruiser character outright states that morality isn't a priority for her. This isn't disappointing as it is "show me something new." It's also ironic that the show premiered on USA where people operating on the edges of polite consensus for their profession -- Hank in Royal Pains; Dani in Necessary Roughness; the obnoxious (in my minority opinion) Shaun in Psych -- was pretty much their entire programming slate.

The most interesting thread is the burden that morally compromising bosses takes on the likes of Rudy (Milo Callaghan) and Sarah (Madison Iseman) and the subsequent tension in their relationship. Coming up through the trenches to your dream job (and the compromises therein) is relatable outside of the legal field, and this show mines it well.

Lana Parilla plays Jocelyn "Bruiser" It still has some of those elements. Lana Parui On a character level, Lana Parilla is

There are too many is.

Not a Comparison, but a New Beginning

The Rainmaker series offers a refreshing new perspective on John Grisham's story. What exists in the book and the earlier adaptations will always differ, and that's natural, this is the artistic vision of the director and the creative team. Their job isn't to replicate the past but to capture the essence in a way that resonates today. I'm not looking at it as a comparison; I see it as something new, designed for a new audience. And so far, it's been promising, engaging, and I've truly loved watching it.

Emotions set the stage

Look, I'm not one for personally critiquing actors...but...I would like to read a lot more from the face, voice and gestures of Milo. Great actors don't even need to speak and you are drawn into the emotions that they are feeling. I'm just not getting that from Rudy (milo). I encourage him to work on that..study the great actors and keep going..my review...under whelming.

Very Interesting!

For those of us not old enough to remember the original movie and I've never seen the original movie, I a came into this unbiased. This is extremely entertaining and I am hooked on the storyline. Rudy and Bruiser are great characters and the "bully" head of the law firm plays a good villain. I would watch this for multiple seasons. Hope it continues!

Steaming pile barely deserving of a 3 out of 10...

What they've done to Grisham's novel by putting this steaming pile into a ridiculous TV series should be a crime. Hard to believe anyone could give this anything higher than a 3 if they've actually watched a few episodes, let alone it having a completely crazy 6.6 average at the time of this review.

The novel was very good. The movie was just ok. But this series is so pathetically turned into a high school drama deserving nothing more than to be another CW joke that's disgustingly shredded a good story with flat out awful, embarrassing writing, character builds and a few ridiculous key castings.

Madison Iseman is an absolutely terrible actress. Constantly overacting with her childish facial expressions. All while looking like a 15 year old trying to pass for a 20+ year old that has absolutely no idea what it even means to be a lawyer or no understanding of what a lawyer's poker face actually is.

Clearly, no one told Dan Fogler that this isn't a comedy and he shouldn't be trying to act like it's a comedy in every single scene he's involved in. Especially when playing a character that's supposed to be a serious, angry, resentful killer with an abusive past. Something you would think a competent director would address and fix immediately in a production. A casting that's even more pathetic than casting Iseman in her role.

One reason I give this a 3 instead of a 1 is because Milo Callaghan is actually pretty good even though the writing of his character is so far off from the quality character build in the novel.

Another reason is John Slattery is also fairly good in his role despite the ridiculous writing that's trying so hard to force comedy into this steaming pile of a shredded good story.

And the third reason is Lana Parrilla and P. J. Byrne aren't too bad in their roles also despite the ridiculous writing trying to force more comedy into the steaming pile.

The sad attempt to try and make this a Suits 2.0 series by destroying a good novel in the process should absolutely be a crime. And they failed miserably in this sad attempt to do so. Series has "Cancelled" written all over it.

Great show..lots of potential

My advice...watch the first 2 episodes for yourself. The super negative reviews must not like this kind of show. Its not going to win any awards but it will have a loyal fan base as the episodes continue. It has interesting characters that you will want to know more about. The acting is good. Every show is not going to be Friends or Cheer or Madlock. Good vs bad...the formula works. Give it a try!

Terrible acting & script.

I really wanted to like this, but the acting is painfully bad. Terrible script, so the actors aren't the only ones to blame.

There is not much else here to keep you watching either.

Watch the movie instead and you'll actually have a solid two hours of entertainment with decent actors.

The lead in this was cast as eye candy, but you can't stake an entire show on that alone.

Give this one a miss.

Has potential

The pilot didn't really leave me hooked, I'll probably keep watching because I enjoy the cast, especially Lana. I think the show could have some potential, but the scripts can definitely be better. Can't really blame the acting, if the writing just isn't there. I think it's a good story and hopefully will get better as the season progresses.

It's been a while not see this kind of series

I watched the first episode and i see that it's promising, the events are fast and the characters fit perfectly with their place.

I also can admit that it has a nice plot, so it's show you a competition between the high power or authority against the poor and the newbay agencies, and guess what: the hero character represent the second part 😅, that's make me so excited. I hope we can see some of "better call Saul" trecks in future episodes 😉

Goliath but with Mike Ross

When starting to watch the show, I had major concerns for the actor who played Rudy. I thought that he was struggling to convey the ambitions/motivations for his character. It took untill past the second episode for me to believe he could convey emotional depth and consistency with his character. I believe the first episode of the series was a genuine pilot epsiode and the actor for Rudy was still trying to get in his skin. I think he eventually conveyed Rudy's past trauma and ambitions well as the series went on. An overall highlight from the show was the chemistry between Rudy, Jocelyn and Deck. Their characters were a good mix of personalities. Jocelyn was played extremely well and was a stand out performance for me. The dialogue writing was good. The overarching storyline (dots case) progressed nicely throughout almost every episode with minimal sub-plots. However one sub plot that was unnecessary was passing the bar exam/ having flashbacks during the exam. Overall, I enjoyed the series as a whole highlighted by incredible chemistry and performances from the extended cast. Followed by an enjoyable overarching storyline. I suspect some negative reviews were from people who didnt make it past the first couple episodes and based their review off that. If you enjoyed Goliath, this show is very similar to that, but with with main character more similar to Mike Ross from Suits.

Don't waste your time

I've watched hundreds, if not thousands of tv shows and movies over the years and I've never been compelled to write an actual review until now. This is one of the worst things I've ever watched. The plot is nonsensical, the acting is wooden, the script is garbage. I appreciate remakes that aren't a like-for-like copy but the choices that the creators of this show have made are incomprehensible, particularly when they had such rich and interesting source material. Like the title says, don't waste your time.

Great and promising

I was on the edge of seat for the most part.

Yes, there were a few moments that were boring, but it picked up speed quickly and I thought the pilot was very good.

Can't wait for the 2nd season and I really do hope there is a 2nd season. I love the character of Bruno and I think Rudy is very good. Good cast in general.

Horrible acting

I tried to watch this mess for 2 episodes but I gave up. Although, I found the 1st episode promising., the 2nd one just clinched in for me.

First of all as a fan of the novel, by Grisham I found it disappointing that they felt the need to change the story I just did not care about any of the characters . John Slattery's acting for his nasty character was over the top and effective least but the other characters just lost my interest and the whole romantic part of the story feels flat.

Started slow, but gets better

The first two episodes were slow and more like a soap opera, but it gets better once they stop focusing on the romance between the two lawyers, Rudy and Sarah.

The David vs Goliath disparity between the two law firms is interesting and believable and really gets you rooting for the underdog.

It reminds me of the Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix which is a good thing. Definitely worth watching.

Zany Fun If You Give Into It

Unnamed Southern City so they can play all the types and stereotypes without pointing any fingers. Real pathos and connection despite everyone being ruthless. If you can look past the goofy moments if that's not your thing and accept the imperfect, occasionally sloppy script, then the show is delightful and, at moments, poignant.
