Aliens Ate My Homework

Aliens Ate My Homework is a story I read in the sixth grade (the same age as "Rod" in the movie), and I'm pleasantly surprised to see a movie adaptation twenty-something years later! The movie is fun, adorable, and made me a bit nostalgic for the days I'd get dropped off at the movies without my parents to see a kids adventure film like Explorers, The Wizard, Masters of the Universe, Flight of the Navigator, SpaceCamp, etc. It's got a little bit of magical realism where something extraordinary happens in your own backyard and while dealing with the real world of bullies, bad grades or struggling parents. And who didn't have a goofy friend totally obsessed with explosive edibles?! The kids they cast are so normal and believable (imdb shows that 2 actors have been in Oscar-nominated films already) and the aliens are both mysterious and funny. William Shatner, who plays an ALIEN, is full of wordplay, a total wink to the older "kids." Since it is based on a series of books, maybe we can look forward to more adventures with the Galactic Patrol.

Not The Goonies, or Explorers, but very watchable, fun, and decent story.

This Movie covers bullying and in a few of the scenes there are alive animals being squished into peoples hair which was disturbing

at the start Rod was afraid to stand up to Billy before, than has no problem fighting back when he discovers something about him. The whole school sees this, while there is clearly abnormal activity, yet nobody questions it. The teachers didn't even do anything about the two boys violently fighting in front of the entire school

Rod also never found out what happened to his father, I would of liked to know what happened to him. I think there is going to be another Movie where it will tell us what happened.

I liked the intro and the songs that were played though out the Movie, I think it went well with the scenes. I like how creative the Movie was. I liked the use of lighting and special effects. most of the acting was good, I found the Movie interesting at times. But some parts got a little boring. the aliens were both mysterious and funny. My fav character has to be mickey, he was funny and he reminded me of my friends.

I just finished reading the first 3 books with my 8 year old daughter (as I had when I was a kid), and this is considerably different, from the characters to the plot. It seemed set up to be a standalone story, but then they decided to make the sequel an adaptation of the 4th book (which I've never read, but just ordered), which I'm sure is more of the same.

As a kids' movie itself, it's quite dumb and noticeably low-budget (I'm guessing 50% went to Shatner). The book nostalgia and my daughter's presence were the only reason I sat through the whole thing.

I've seen worse, but it definitely could've been done much better.
