The Devils of the Earth

Good series but found this one a bit Artsy and plagued by overacting. I think the Director indulged himself a bit at the expense of the viewer.

A worthy companion to The Terror (S1) and The Revenant

The comparisons to The Terror (S1) is not without merit: late 19th century naval expeditions, journeys into the Arctic north, elements of hopelessness, salvation, damnation, redemption, starvation, mutiny, and the unknown. The North Water, especially in this episode, triumphs with its excellent cinematography and production, with picturesque expansive shots of the frigid tundra landscape, often in its isolate desolation and other times in the chaos brought upon by the howling wind and the swirling snow. Also noteworthy is it musical score, a cacophony of discordant sounds that haunts and unsettles whenever it arises.

As has said before, Jack O'Connel and Colin Farrel are relevations here. They are primal and vulnerable in their respective roles, each searching for themselves aboard the Volunteer.

For years, I have yearned for a series to follow up after watching The Revenant. And then most recently, The Terror (S1) rekindled that fire. Now, I consider The North Water a worthy companion for both.

As Winter starts to set in the surviving men are stranded on a remote island of northern Canada. So much happens in this one hour, all wrapped in an incredible environment that few know of. Excellent performances all round with Colin Farrell at his fiendish best. It's a jaw-dropping episode. Just let it all wash over you like the snow hits the men.
