No pun intended - and quite obvious from the beginning. Yes we do get the classical story (which I assume you are aware of, but will not go into details just in case), but our main character (heroine) is not sitting idly when we first meet her. She also is not doing chores. No she tries to get back to where she is supposed to be, without being noticed (caught).
So yes, this version is a bit of an update. Do not think that this is "woke" though - it is always nice to have some extra spins on things. To get a bit of difference to other versions that exist. Acting wise this is fine - for what it is of course. Keep that in mind and be the judge if the movie is something you want to watch anyway.

What a mess, the prince' best buddies kissing, Cinderella and prince not kissing. Prince adopted or mommy Queen had an affair..? Prince looks nothing like his parents and I find it hard to believe they raised such a moron. Cinderella and prince seemed to have nothing in common except horse racing. Nice horses and nice scenery, and the cruel stepmother (Ellen D. P) did a good job.
I am Czech , so obviously I grow up with the original Christmas classic and I was very excited to see the Norwegian version.
But I agree with other reviewers. This film remake was very disappointing and I really disliked the message of it. I understand that in 2021 there was an attempt to add more diversity reflecting the culture of our society now.. but ..
Prince in the film was not charismatic at all, no qualities or something interesting to offer, absolutely useless person. His friends are gay and are probably the only couple to experience true chemistry as they kissed at the end of the movie . Prince seems to fall in love with Askepott when she is dressed as a boy with a mustache. Ok. It's a modern version. But why he didn't kiss her at the end of the movie when basically anyone kissed?
On the other hand the female characters remain desperate for marriage as the only possible salvation of their existence. No remake at this point.
In the original Czech film, I liked Askepott's charisma and her relationship with animals , her strong personality. In the Norwegian version Askepott was so desperate to get married with someone she didn't have any chemistry basically..

I generally don't make reviews, but could not resist, because I like practically all the "cinderrella" variations out there. Including the Czech one.
90% of the dialogue and action is from the Czech version. All they attempted was to reshoot the old lines in a fresh way in fresh costumes in Norwegian surroundings. That's fine, I have no problem with that.
The problem is that the only actor able to deliver lines was Alfred. Even though that actor is a veteran, he was still struggling to do so in a way that conveyed a believable character. All the other characters were embarrassingly bad. Not a singel line had emotions or depth behind it. They were spoken as if they had not seen the script before, yet alone the old movie.
I cannot believe all the actors are that bad. So it has to boil down to the director. - A lack of experience from beginning to end.
There is no excuse for having an inexperienced bad director do this job, they knew it would sell well and they would turn a profit. So how could this happen? I really would like to know the decision making process behind it.
Lots of other bad stuff, like the reade music. Was the old music copyrighted? Remaking similar tunes was a horrible idea.. But all that is nothing compared to the delivery of the lines, the acting and theatre editing. Awful awful stuff.
2 stars for the horses and nature.

I found this to be a alright adaptation of the story and adds little new with it. The story is your standard Cinderella version with a couple of differences to it. I do like how active Cinderella is with her horseback riding and knowing how to a bow. But it felt the movie could have given more development to her because she lacks any development and isn't that interesting. Even the romance between her and the prince isn't fully flesh out and doesn't have a chemistry between them. Speaking of the prince, he's pretty bland with little to offer of him and plays the standard prince you see in any adaptation. As for the stepmother, she mostly plays the typical stepmother you see in any adaptation and adds nothing to her. One thing that is different is that there's no fairy godmother in the adaptation, which is fine because it try something new with the source material. But how Cinderella got her wishes feels like a plot connivence when it happened.
One big positive is that the location and cinematography looks beautiful and amazing on the job the filmmakers put into the movie. It really looks gorgeous with it being in a snowy environment that gives some atmosphere to the movie and the different shots it presented here. Even the set design looks great inside current location of the movie like the castle looks great. I also like the music and dance sequence the movie presented since it executed pretty well.
The three wishes I wish to improve is to give the characters more development to them, have a better chemistry between Cinderella and the prince, and have the movie build with its new ideas.
