Huge props to Tom Sturridge and Boyd Holbrook on this. And as for the novels/series statements, i don't have a say as this is my first interaction with the series.
The only problem with the episode itself are the expositive dialogues, which took me off it, therefore making my personal experience less enjoyable, but, if you embrace the little bit of corny the episode has, you will be simply delighted with it. A show i recommend, it's good.
And props to the direction as well, beautiful artistic shots and a good work not focusing a 100% on the CGI made objects, it made for a more realistic environment, some TV shows don't balance the direction and expose the flaws in the CGI completely and... it's not what you want.
Great episode.
The comic panels that were pulled straight from the book itself were great, the moment that we see Dream brought into the waking world that was awesome, 100% accurate! I have to say that Tom Sturridge is awesome for the role. Voice and appearance spot on, movements just on point. Charles Dance as Burgess another prefect casting in the series. The same role as Tywin Lannister was made for him to play for the rest of his life, the begrudging father of a second son that dreams of his first. I am interested that the Corinthian has been introduced this early in the series but again the casting seems as though this has been nailed.
I cant fault the first episode of the series, its just taking a while to get round to this as I love the comics and this has definitely stood up to the wonder of those.

- TriviaIn the comics, Dream was imprisoned for 70 years (1916-1986). In order to bring the story up to the present day, this was changed to "over a hundred years". To accommodate this, the ruby is said to prolong people's lives, a trait it did not have in the comics.
- ErroresThe bird Jessamy is thought by some viewers to be a magpie due to her coloration; if true, this would make it a goof that the characters all refer to her as a raven. However, her body shape is not that of a magpie. She is actually an African raven of the species Corvus albus, also called the "pied crow", which gets its name from its distinctive white markings.

Dream: [narrates] We begin in the waking world... which humanity insists on calling the real world, as if your dreams have no effect upon the choices you make. You mortals go about your work, your loves, your wars, as if your waking lives are all that matter. But there is another life which awaits you when you close your eyes, and enter my realm. For I am the King of Dream, and Nightmares. When the waking world leaves you wanting and weary, sleep brings you here to find freedom and adventure, to face your fears and fantasies in Dreams and Nightmares that I create - and which I must control, lest they consume and destroy you. That is my purpose and my function. Or it was, until I left my kingdom to pursue a rogue Nightmare.
