At first, I started playing this game with my brother, and while it didn't last long, I had a blast. Luckily, my friend wanted to play it with me, so I was able to play this game all the way through and give its justice... which may have hurt my opinion of the game sadly. Anyways, this games story deals with a sentient disease/sickness called The Root, which is taking over multiple realities. You are tasked to find and eradicate the root, going through many realities in doing so. Now, the comparison with dark souls is apparent. Not only is the boss fights really difficult, but they have rings/amulets that akin to Dark Souls. Same as leveling up weapons and boss weapons. Now, I've only played Dark Souls 1+2, so idk if 3 has this, but the cool thing about this game is that not only do you get boss weapons from killing bosses, but you also get mods, which are basically abilities for your guns. And you can mix and match with the weapons that aren't boss weapons which makes builds so much more fluid and customizable. Now, playing through the campaign normally with my friend, we ended up killing a good portion of the side bosses, with some being way easier than others. The problem with this game is that it used RNG for it map layouts and boss spawning, which hey, it makes the game replayable ... but to an extent. If there's a certain boss you want to fight, there's a good chance you will have to replay the same "biome" multiple times since the RNG doesn't seem to exclude bosses you already fought. So, the dlc to this game (swamp Corsus) was pretty pointless imo because we replayed that biome over 6 times and never was able to kill the Iskall Queen. Despite that dlc, the other main dlc, Subject 2923, proved to be a complete blast of a dlc. Giving some more cool lore, creatures, and of course, the final boss. It was definitely a great way to end the game. Swamp of Corsus survival was pretty mid imo, although me and my friend gave it a swing a few times with little success.
In all, this game was pretty solid, albeit frustrating. Some of these optional bosses are infuriatingly hard, but so rewarding once they were finally defeated. The main boss fights were awesome, the map layouts were procedurally generated so not the best, but there was always loot and scrap to find, and the teamwork this game enforces to kill some of these optional bosses can be quite rewarding. Definitely recommended for coop fans.
The weapons and armors loot and overall progression over the game are overall a disappointment. You start with you class weapons and then you can buy the starting weapons from the other classes. Then you can't buy or craft new ones apart from the ones you can craft after killing bosses. And there's very few you find from loot. Kinda the same goes for armors. A lot of the weapons are cool though and it's good that you don't just use a regular gun all through as that would be boring.
Imo it's diasappointing killing enemies, discovering and looting in the semi open world and in dungeons as there's not that much loot, the main reason is to loot iron and better metals to upgrade your weapons and armor pieces. And to just clear the path to get to the next area, dungeon or main boss.
The core of the game is really good but it could have been so much better. Things I would like: * Longer game * Bigger semi open worlds, now it's just a path * Gear loot or gear crafting resources from regular enemies and elite enemies.
Wouldn't really recomment playing solo. I played it 2p and you can difinitely see it's made for 3p (or 2), for example there's usually a lot of smaller enemies that keeps spawning during the boss fights. In terms of difficulty I would probably play normal if solo. If you're 2 you can play normal and hard if you're experienced or want a challenge. Wouldn't touch the upper two difficulties unless you're 3 or really want a challenge if you're 2.
And as I progressed in the game the more that I level up my character and unlocked more levels to go the more difficult the game increased as usual. The game has an infinite backpack capacity to help players choose their own combat style, armor, and resources to fit. The game loot system is not very similar to games like Skyrim or Dragon's Dogma but it is still good. The shooting in the game is actually good even though it can't free aim at the other enemies and so is melee combat even if there is no target lock. And adding in-game gun mods that are added with fantasy magic is something that I have never seen before including guns that are filled with fantasy magic. Enemies were almost very fun to kill although I get killed instantly because of lacking upgrades and not enough items for healing. And Simulacrum is absolutely very rare to get when not upgrading my items and Dragonheart wisely.
This game also encourages me to play it with friends meaning if that boss or level is difficult I need players in order to beat a level. The only criticism is that this does not have a chat option for players who don't have a speaker which makes it frustrating that it is more of a speed run rather than a campaign because I missed on secret item or spot so side mission to activate.
I really like the campaign story in this game. It's not actually too perfect but it's actually pretty good. Although the story felt a little bit confusing, it's good but a little confusing. Sometimes I just always wonder what my character's place look like before he sailed off or why he use the starter sword called "The Blade of Adventure" I think of my theory that is a family heirloom.
In conclusion, I say that this Souls-like game with guns is something to look up to. And I hope that this game will have its own sequel to expand more of this story.
