The change in quality from episode 1 to episode 2 is honestly some of the most disappointing stuff I've ever seen. Why did they agree to let a different animation studio take care of this? And NOT do it justice? Episode 1 l set me up for so much excitement in this series, and now I'm just left feeling worried that every other episode will have quality like this. I couldn't even enjoy the narrative that was being told here because the animation was so distracting(ly bad). Please episode 3 bring my hope back for this series, otherwise another disappointment review from another disappointed fan awaits...
Its very disappointing. I was really excited about this one, They fooled me with the first episode. And for some reason they changed studios after the first?? I dont know which studio is responsible for this abomination but they must be getting paid in leaves and dirt or smt.
That beach part was actually crazy, made me laugh a little. They were literally running in the same place, the animators decided to zoom in on them and i could not focus on the story at all thats how bad the animation is... I really dont understand if its just going to be 4 episodes long why not put more effort into it or just dont release it.
They are literally using png's It's just South Park but horror or something like that. Worse than Berserk 2016. Instead of watching this, just read the manga.
Very big disappointment.
Sorry if u don't like how i wrote this, Im still learning English :)

Whatever budget they had for the first episode was devoured by a spiral for episode two. The first had rotoscoping but I didn't see any of that in the second. They went from Uzumaki standing alone among Juni Ito's adaptations to another episode of the Junji Ito Collection.
If this came out when it was originally slated back in 2022 I could excuse it as rushed. But they pushed it back at least twice. So I have no evidence this was pushed back for quality.
Compare this to Pluto(fantastic limited-run anime) which fell off the radar completely after a brief clip teasing it but when it finally aired it was clear production took its time.
Uzumaki deserved better.

I love a lot about this episode, despite it moving at a breakneck pace. Kyrie is the highlight of the episode as it does a great job of emphasizing her ceaseless ability to empathize with others. The scenarios do not have time to breathe, but incredibly fast pace does create the effect of spiraling anxiety that there is no reprieve from. After all, a lot of what Uzumaki is about is how much the universe is apathetic to our sense of what makes sense and what is fair. Kyrie tries her best to maintain her sanity and help others which is admirable despite the meaninglessness of the spiral's takeover of the town.
Like I said before, the pacing is a real problem and I am confused as to why this only has four episodes. I guess that Junji Ito's work is popular but not profitable? Sometimes it shakes out like that. This lack of budget also extends to the decreased quality of the animation in this episode. There is quite a bit less detail here than in the previous episode and some of the character movements look awkward (but in a way that is unintentionally kind of hilarious- something that works well for horror; i.e. See the moment where Shuichi runs from Kyrie to get some scissors).
I don't know what is going on in television right now but it feels like a gosh darn mess. It is sad that animators are paid so little and worked in to exhaustion. It's sad that studios take on too many IPs so that audiences have to wait years and years for a new season. It's sad that, in America, companies are increasingly undervaluing writers and cutting their time to work on scripts which causes the season to fall apart (after the wins for the WGA this may get a little better- in America, at least). This show clearly loves the manga but is held back by material realities outside of its control. I fear for the future of art in general, to be honest, and this episode did nothing to assuage those fears.

Let's get this out of the way, there is a drop in animation quality as episodes 2-4 were done by a different studio with much less rotoscoping. There are animation errors and the pacing is jarring at times. Even still, it is a miracle that this show made it to release and episode two continues the creepy and unnerving vibe of episode one. I don't think many people realize how much the pandemic altered the arts and, while it sucks that this episode and the next two are done by a different studio and are not fully rotoscoped, this is what needed to be done to get the show released. The HBO/Discovery merger axed dozens of great shows and somehow Uzumaki spiraled its way out to release. This is still the best Ito animation adaptation and the show is still a top tier horror mini series.
