Attempting to carry out an experiment, a college student looking into a potential illegal fracking operation nearby takes several students on a trip to investigate, but when the crew is attacked by ravenous mutated maggots from an illegal toxic waste dump must stop them from escaping.
This was a rather fun and enjoyable cheesy creature feature. One of the finer features of this one is the highly involved storyline that gives the film the kind of cheesy throwback storyline required of this type of feature. The central premise of the expedition into the woods as a part of an experiment into a series of rumors that an illegal fracking operation was responsible for reports of mutations in the area which soon allows them to come across the series of genuinely mutated creatures running wild as a result gives the film a suitably cheesy and fun setup. With this premise allowing the opportunity to get the group into the woods looking into the stories about the mutations, which also explains the maggots, this serves the film perfectly well with the requirements necessary to get everything together in a fun manner. That also gives everything a lot to like with the creature attacks, which are incredibly silly and goofy. With a fine mixture of goofy effects for the creatures in their execution being obvious hand-puppets or models manipulated against the characters, the scenes have a cheesy atmosphere despite the seriousness of the scenario where the creatures are always treated like threats even with the execution present. That gives the big multi-stage attack on their campsite, the chase through the woods filled with fleeing maggots, or the wild finale featuring the raid on the main hideout where the creatures are attempting to complete their finale transformation into the full-size fly that gives off enough great gore gags to be a good time. These all manage to give the film plenty of enjoyable features, although there are a few slight drawbacks with this one. The main issue here is the rather unlikable main group of students that we're forced to follow, who are pretty much the hallmarks of every irritating trope of students in the genre. The girls are fine the longer they're on-screen after initially appearing as sex-crazed morons, while the main guy is simply obnoxious with irritating commentary involving nothing but peer pressure into using his drug supply, displays irritating comments or tactics that are supposed to be funny yet are everything except that, and spouts off stuff so stupid it's hard to imagine he's gotten far enough in lif to get into college. Given that it's intended to be comedic, it just grows tiresome the longer it continues, so everything is just plain hard to get through. Along with the aforementioned cheesy creature effects that are on display, these all manage to knock this one back slightly.
