Was actually looking forward to "Space Station Scooby". The Scooby Doo franchise has done space station episodes well before, such as 'What's New Scooby Doo's' "Space Ape at the Cape". Despite not caring for 'Happy Halloween Scooby Doo', Bill Nye was a fun supporting character. One does also expect a lot from a last episode of a season, and on first watch "Space Station Scooby" did mostly impress me. But even then there was the sense of it not feeling like a season finale.
Still do feel that way rewatching it, and did read somewhere since that it was not the intended season finale ("The High School Wolfman's Musical Lament" apparently was meant to be). The first season did see some great episodes, such as "Dance Matron of Mayhem", "The Wedding Witch of Wainsley Hall" and especially "I Put a Hex on You" ("A Run Cycle Through Time" is also great). As well as a few disappointments, such as "When Urkel-Bots Go Mad", "The Fastest Food Fiend" and "Quit Clowning". "Space Station Scooby" is one of the somewhere in the middle episodes of 'Scooby Doo and Guess Who's' first season.
There are a lot of things done well. There are some lovely character moments, such as Scooby's tail when in his astronaut suit scaring him and Neil DeGrasse Tyson's reaction (as well as how that was taken by Shaggy and Scooby). Nye and DeGrasse Tyson were tremendously fun guest stars, and Nye has some particularly good chemistry with the gang. Velma really shines in the chemistry between the guest stars. Really liked the atmospheric and atmospherically used setting and the cool villain, who is very scary in the first scene in fact. As well as the fascinating scientific facts.
Did think that "Space Station Scooby" did start off well, with a suitably formidable opening sequence. All the gang are on top form as are all the voice actors. The animation is crisp, richly detailed and colourful throughout and the music has groove and atmosphere. While the theme song is too short it is always nice to hear the original theme song in some shape or form. The writing is fun and smart and enough of the story is compelling.
Other episodes in the season and of 'Scooby Doo and Guess Who' in general have much stronger mysteries. This was a very predictable and middle of the road one.
While the villain is a cool one, it is let down by how obvious the identity of the responsible is very early on which made the reveal all round too easily foreseeable too early.
In summary, good but not great. 7/10.
