At the ripe old age of 70 Frank Sinatra made a return visit to Tokyo where the Japanese feted him and listened to him sing like no other. He also slipped a bit and while he sang Luck Be A Lady he 'forgot' that there is no such thing as the "L" sound in Japanese and a few other Eastern languages and came out with "R" that those people trying to learn English will come out with. I think Old Blue Eyes forgot where he was for a second and thought he was a street kid back in Hoboken.
That selection also was responsible for a bit more acidity. Back in the 60s for his Reprise label, Sinatra did all star albums of 4 Broadway shows and one was Guys And Dolls. He always gave himself the best numbers and he owned the label and was the boss. The Sky Masterson songs that he would love to have sung on screen he sang here and well.
But when he did the movie version for Sam Goldwyn, Sky Masterson was played by Marlon Brando and he got the good songs. Was Frank or someone not looking at the contract when they signed with Goldwyn. Frank was put out to put it mildly. Sinatra and Brando developed a nasty hate that lasted to the day Sinatra died. In introducing Luck Be A Lady he mentioned he didn't sing it in the film. It was sung by Marlon Brando, 'some baritone' said Sinatra going into the song.
The rest was his usual standards that he performed at concerts. I still want to know why I never heard All The Way or Young At Heart at any of them.
