Perhaps because it was only renewed for two more seasons but the show in 2025 is really getting down to business laying the groundwork for Kirk and the crew from TOS to get rolling. No more musical episodes or weird offshoots, just a good Trek feeling (though turning the Gorn into a Borg-like threat is an intriguing move). It's great watching Spock mentor the young Kirk through a disastrous mission on the Farragut into the confidence we'll see later on. It feels almost a shame Anson Mount has to relinquish the role of Pike into his ultimate fate as a vegetable given how fully-fleshed he's made the character (I saw him and Ethan Peck discuss their love of the series at the Trek Con during the writer's strike). Maybe they can somehow fold that alternate future where he escapes the explosion into the new Academy series; he's been the best Captain since Scott Bakula on Enterprise. Don't need no doctor for these Strange New Worlds (other than Bones and that African guy)!
I have to admit that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was so much better than I expected. This is the prequel to the original Star Trek and even has some familiar characters like Spock and Uhura. It's led by Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and has basically the same plot as the original in where they explore the galaxy. This is actually one of the most well received Star Trek shows ever by both the critics and fans, it currently has a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. It has a new fresh feel while also honoring the original. This is a show that both new fans and longtime fans can both enjoy. This hooked me from the very first episode and didn't let go. I binged the entire first season over a weekend and I'm already looking forward for next season.
Captain Pike's swooshy future pompadour is completely distracting from most of what he says, serious or comedic, in Season 3. Which means it's always the star of the scene. You know I'm right. Do yourself a favor: watch any scene where the camera is centred on him and try not to look at his hair. You can't. No one can!

This is BY FAR the best realization of ST:TOS -- The Original Series. It was a self contained mission. It delivered a morality message. It addressed issues of psychology and emotional intelligence. It worked to connect various timelines. It did not take itself too seriously, at the right times.
Stories that leaked about series development, indicated that Anson Mount had a number of conditions, for taking the role. I am pleased that he persisted and persevered, and has taken the rigid "starch" out of the captains uniform -- present in every series after TOS.
I am also VERY impressed with the rest of the casting. And, I hope they explain why the bridge is mostly female -- which is absolutely WONDERFUL! The rethinking of Nurse Chappel's character is compelling. The casting of Babs Olusanmokun as the Doctor is genius. Christina Chong as security chief (a position that didn't exist in TOS) brings a spirit reminiscent of Cara Gee in The Expanse, and manifests Gene's vision realized in ST:TNG.
Let's face it, ST:TOS was full of mistakes, inconsistencies, and many rediculously bad stories. ST:SNW isn't perfect either, but is clearly making the best effort yet.
And yes, screenwriters of today are less literate and don't do their homework or research. ST:DIS confused flaunt with flout, and now ST:SNW confused com (communications) with conn (control). Even other reviewers spelled it wrong. To err is to be human. Embody the Star Trek ideal -- HAVE COMPASSION & EMPATHY.
I would love to see more than 10 episodes per year.

I am a longtime Star Trek fan. I even have a Star Trek coffee cup. Strange New World started off great and then they tried to be funny. I think the only one that worked was the prodigy crossover. Spock and his girlfriend changing minds, the fairytale the musical And the cartoon are really poor. They are probably trying to reach little kids with these episodes but they don't work for me. Stop please!

- TriviaBruce Horak, the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
- ErroresThere are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long.
Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by.
Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.
