The first 'season' is a series of 7 webisodes ( that are 3-7 minutes in length). The makers might be hoping to replicate the success of "Broad City." (BC). BC started out as a series of webisodes that was ultimately picked up by Comedy Central, where it enjoyed a successful run as a full fledged sitcom.
Also like BC, the "Heartbeat, Baby, Eggplant" (HBE) is about the dynamic of young women in contemporary society. While BC was about two best friends bonding over similarities, HBE is about three friends supporting their differences. One is a young married (Laura). The second is in the beginnings of serious relationship (Alison). The third is enjoying her emotional/sexual freedom (Rati).
Given the obvious budget limitations, the production is solid. More importantly, the writing is solid. I found it to provide insight into the lives of young contemporary women in a clever way. Over the course of the 7 webisodes, there are some laugh out loud moments: perhaps not as many as one would like. However should the creative team be able to develop the program on a streaming service (like Peacock), the situations, characters and tone will undoubtable come into greater focus. Considering that this project is in a developmental/experimental phase, it is to be forgiven for having something of a washed out tone. The talent, for a truly solid comedic study of culture and relationships, is there. Given that they were obviously scrambling to raise the money for HBE, a certain lack of focus is understandable.
Like BC, HBE has a distinctive edge but not as cutting.
