Well, with a title such as "Shit and Champagne", I figured that I would be for something out of the ordinary. And as the movie was labelled a comedy, I figured chances were that it might turn out to be a great movie. Sure, I hadn't heard about writer and director D'Arcy Drollinger's 2020 movie before now as I sat down to watch it, so I wasn't sure what I was in for here.
And I will say that "Shit and Champagne" definitely was something else. However, the movie is somewhat of an acquired taste, and it is not a movie that will easily find an appeal to just everyone in the audience. While I managed to sit through the entire movie, I was less than adequately entertained, as most of the comedy elements in "Shit and Champagne" fell short of hitting the mark, at least in terms of aligning with my sense of humor.
"Shit and Champagne" is a laid back and not-taking-itself-too-serious type of movie, and that was the movie's strong side, because the storyline and script was just not something that turned out all that entertaining for me.
The acting in "Shit and Champagne" was adequate, but I suppose that is how it was supposed to be, over the top and extraordinary, just as those drag queen shows tend to be. But maybe that is just exactly why the movie fell short of entertaining me in a memorable way, as I am not really much of an appreciative fan of that particular scene.
The comedy in the movie mostly fell on dry spots in terms of providing me with a good laugh, so most of the comedy in "Shit and Champagne" just was a swing and a miss for my liking.
Sure, there is an audience out there for a movie such as "Shit and Champagne", of that I am more than sure. I just wasn't in the target audience.
My rating of "Shit and Champagne" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

I bought this Blu-ray solely based on the wild synopsis written on the back. It's one of those "I've got to see this" premises. Some highlights featured are a world-renowned calf model (whose fate is, well...), a sex, drug and back-to-school clothing ring, booty bumps (don't ask), and Mall-Wart brand discount prostitutes, as well as some crazy fighting, dancing, and stripping.
S#!t and Champagne is based on a drag stage show, of which you can see clips of in the extras section. I'm assuming this ran for a while, because the performances in the movie are spot-on. Impeccable timing, fully-realized characters, and some great comedy. Surprisingly, all the same actors in the show reprise their characters in the movie. You don't see that often. Also, scenes in the movie are straight out of the show.
I don't know what the budget was on this movie, but it is professionally made (and it's supposed to be parodying low budget exploitation flicks of the 70's). They've foregone the overused grindhouse aesthetic for what is a really good-looking film. Production is period-specific to the 1970's, and it has a great soundtrack! (Though not 70's specific).
I'm sure this movie is aimed at a particular niche audience, but if you're a fan of wacked-out, high-camp comedies, this certainly has a lot to offer. It occured to me after watching this, both subjects in the title are represented prominently in the movie (so add "low brow" to my description).

Darcy Drollinger is a national treasure. A great adaptation of my favorite Oasis drag show. So happily surprised to see it picked up by Hulu. If you like camp, drag, hideous hilarity, ludicrous epaulettes, super calf models, and movies about booty bumps, you won't be disappointed.
Definitely a movie for fans of John Waters! Crass, cheesy, gross, and campy as all get out. But also funny, slick, stylish, and well done. D'Arcy Drollinger as 'Champagne' is a cross between Divine and Farrah Fawcett. Whereas Water's was great at capturing the mugs Divine would give, Champagne gives them without effort. The dialog and acting is witty, fast, and over the top. Matthew Martin as the evil Dixie Stampede is priceless! The story is a bit convoluted involving a new addictive drug that causes users to lose control of their bowels. Once hooked, they're brainwashed to become employees at a shopping chain known as 'Mall Wart'. Which is actually a front for Dixie's prostitution empire. Using the employees to turn tricks in order to get their fix. Champagne's fiance is killed by Dixie's two thugs, and Champagne may have learned too much before he died. Thus Dixie wants her eradicated, and Champagne wants revenge. All in all just silly adult fun with nods and references to 70's and 80's pop culture galore. Hope there's more Champagne on tap for the future!

I had no idea what to expect and that made discovering this movie the best time ever!
My friend and I watched it together after scrolling forever. We and laughed out loud the whole time, were repeating lines back to each other, and enjoying the madcap mayhem. I recommend it now to all my friends and can't wait for more from Darcy!
This movie doesn't take itself seriously in a fun self aware way. It's actually really clever how simple and fun they made this film.
Def enjoy it when in a lighthearted mood with your funnest friends! Get than Champagne and get ready for a great comedy with your new fav drag queen and all her friends.
