  • Someone in Iron Lake has discovered Jim Lindsay's secret identity, sending Dexter on the prowl to find out who it was. This pursuit leads him to realize that he might not be the only serial killer in town. Meanwhile Harrison spirals out of control during a wrestling match and Angela makes a dark discovery of her own.—SHOWTIME
  • Dexter's relationship with chief Angela is badly strained after she found out he changed identity, but he manages for now to make her believe to be innocent. Dexter finds out that Kurt is a serial killer, fails to keep Harrison away and arrives at his wood cabin with murder dungeon just in time to prevent him eliminating blogger Molly Park and Angela there. Harrison's dark side reemerges gruesomely in a school wrestling match, meanly co-coached by Kurt, Dexter doesn't know how to handle it and joint therapy only seems to estrange Harrison further. Assuming Kurt covered Matt's tracks, Angela finds her long lost friend Iris's corpse in Clark Caves and calls Dexter for his crime scene analysis skills.—KGF Vissers

Sinopsis

  • Dexter's life and routine are more tumultuous than ever. Police Chief Angela Bishop knows he is really Dexter Morgan and not "Jim Lindsay"; Dexter knows that his son, Harrison, likes to hurt others; Molly, the pod-caster, is inexplicably still stirring things up instead of leaving town; and Kurt is equally inexplicably pretending that his missing son, Matt, is still alive.

Dexter is very annoyed that Kurt has taken a personal interest in his son, offering Harrison a job at Kurt's truck stop. Dexter refuses to sign the permission form to let Harrison take the job. When Harrison goes to apply for the job anyway, Kurt forges Dexter's name on the form.

Kurt's serial killing ritual continues, as does the appearance of his rage, which he cannot control when things do not go exactly as he plans. He is particularly enraged about his latest kill, a young woman who did not let him kill her the way he wanted to, but made him shoot her in the face. He tries to prepare her for burial in his well equipped, private mortuary, but he cannot repair the damage that his bullet did to her face, so he punches the corpse, putting it further beyond repair.

Dexter and Harrison go to therapy together, but Harrison only feels more abandoned by Dexter who hides behind lies that are obvious to Harrison. At dinner, Harrison gets up and says he is going to eat in his room. Dexter takes one bite of his steak and then gives up on the meal. He does not know it when Harrison sneaks out and goes to Audrey's bedroom window. Audrey is about to hit him with a pair of nunchuks when she realizes it is Harrison. They talk and find that they are both outsiders and essentially orphans, although Angela has been a supportive stepmother to Audrey. Harrison confesses that he thinks all the time about hurting people, but Audrey makes excuses for him. They kiss, and as Harison climbs on top of her, the straight razor in his back pocket is exposed. When Angela finds the two of them in bed the next morning, she is pissed. She takes Harrison to Dexter's front door and tells him to handle his son.

Angela is beginning to wonder whether Matt is dead and if his father buried him. She plans to go to the caves outside of town and see if by any chance Matt is there, dead or alive. She asks Sgt. Josh Logan to go with her, but Josh is the coach of the wrestling team, which has a dual meet that night. So she decides to take the less experienced Officer Teddy Reed with her.

Dexter erroneously suspects that Molly is Angela's source for the truth about Dexter's identity. He listens to Molly's podcast about the Bay Harbor Butcher (Dexter), and learns that Molly suspects that there is more to it than the official "case closed" verdict, but she does not say more about her suspicions except that the real "Butcher" might still be "out there". Spying on Molly, Dexter is alarmed and puzzled to find Molly and Kurt (the father of a recent victim of Dexter) putting their heads together at a local watering hole. He greets them and, before leaving them to continue their conversation, he puts a cell phone behind the counter to bug them. He soon learns that he was on the wrong track in thinking that Molly was looking into him. She tells Kurt she knows that Matt did not really go to New York, but she hides the fact that Angela also knows this. Kurt makes up a new lie about his son coming to him and Kurt hiding him at an abandoned cabin. He offers to take Molly there to interview Matt.

Listening to all of this, Dexter knows it is a ruse and wonders how Kurt plans to get away with it. He follows them to the cabin and soon picks up on the telltale clues that Kurt, too, might be a serial killer. The cabin is isolated, with its own power source, he notes. "As off the grid as you can get", he thinks. To him, the situation feels like a killer luring his prey to an isolated place where nobody knows they have gone. (Except Dexter.) In the basement of the cabin, Molly is getting a bad vibe herself. She reaches for the pepper spray in her purse. Kurt keeps up the ruse by knocking on a door at the end of a hall, calling for Matt to open the door. Just then, Dexter comes down the cellar stairs and claims he was just out for a drive and thought he saw suspicious figures moving around the supposedly abandoned property.

Trying to suppress obvious frustration, Kurt puts on a congenial face. He claims that, since Matt isn't answering the door, he must be out. Dexter walks up to the door and opens it easily. The room contains a well made bed and a well-appointed bathroom, which Dexter inspects. ("What is it about serial killers and bathtubs?" he wonders to himself.) Dexter also notices that there is no door knob on the inside of the door to the room. When they are leaving, Dexter politely offers to close the door with Kurt still in the room. Kurt tells him this is not necessary, almost losing his cool. After both of them promise Kurt they will keep Matt's hiding place a secret, Dexter drives Molly back to town. Left alone, Kurt puts his fist through a wall.

While Angela and the deputy explore the caves, Harrison is about to have his first wrestling match. It is his high school against another. Dexter shows up late, but is there before Harrison's match begins. Josh tells Harrison that his opponent is an experienced wrestler and not to feel bad if he does not win; just surviving the match will be a victory as far a Josh is concerned.

Angela finds a wall inside the cave that looks as if someone deliberately sealed it. She opens it and goes in, finding a rat and, eventually, a large cave. She moves a pile of rocks and finds a shoe. She calls on Officer Reed to come through and join her. They remove enough rocks to identify the body as Iris, a childhood friend of Angela who mysteriously disappeared decades ago when they were teens.

Meanwhile, Harrison wrestles with an opponent who fights dirty. Kurt, who is an assistant coach (officially or unofficially, since his son Matt was once captain of the wrestling team), tells Harrison "use your anger". Harrison not only defeats his opponent but gratuitously breaks his arm. The two teams get into a near melee. Dexter rushes down to the floor and accuses Kurt of telling his son to hurt the other boy. The two men are both ordered to leave the gymnasium.

Dexter tells Harrison that he does not like Kurt, but Harrison is convinced that Kurt is a great guy who has been nothing but supportive. Dexter gets a call from Angela and says he has to take it. Harrison stalks away. Dexter answers using his pseudonym "Jim".

"I don't need Jim", says Angela, calling from the newly discovered crime scene. "I need Dexter".
