I wasn't exactly sure what to expect as I knew it hadn't had a big budget and I don't often see films not produced by major studios. I was completely blown away! This film absolutely could rival big studio thrillers.
The acting, the story, the filming, all drew me in right from the beginning. Lyvia's House clearly written and filmed with great care and vision. It has just the right amount of suspense and mystery to keep your interest throughout. It was one of the best movies I've seen in years. I cannot wait to watch this again!
The lead actress delivered an incredibly raw performance, and the supporting cast brought depth and authenticity to every interaction. I was completely shocked by the final twist-it's the kind of ending that makes you want to rewatch the whole thing with new eyes. Knowing it was inspired by true events made the whole experience even more chilling. If you're into true crime, psychological thrillers, or small-town mysteries, this is one you won't want to miss. It stays with you.
Shot in a small farming community North of Sacramento, the landscape is extraordinary. With orchards and fields as a backdrop the film provides just the right atmosphere.
The actors do a wonderful job in their roles. The soundtack features several local singers and bands adding to this delightful production.
Lastly, although this is a thriller/drama/suspense film, be ready for laughs with properly inserted comic elements!
This is extremely low budget, cheesy, and comes across very much like a made-for-tv movie from the 1990s or early 2000s.
The leading lady and her man act like they cannot even tell that the woman in the painting looks exactly like her. This is not promising and I do not even want to keep watching it.

- TriviaLyvia's House was written as "something different to do" during Covid lockdowns by novelist Patricia V. Davis. She sent the treatment to a wonderful screenwriter friend of hers, who encouraged her to sell it. Instead, she decided to raise the money to produce it herself, and fifty percent of what she raised came from her readership. One of her main goals with the film was to present the rural, agricultural area of northern California where her husband was born in a positive light, as opposed to the usual Hollywood tropes of John Boy Walton or Leatherface. The family has owned and operated a rice farm there for five generations. Director of Photography, Cody Martin, was also born and raised in the area. He was immediately intrigued by the idea of setting a film in his community. He approached the screenwriter/producer and offered his services and contacts. The hard-working talented Martin has a great reputation in the local film industry, and with his assistance, the production was able to procure generous support from the local film community, who provided thousands of dollars of filming equipment for nominal fees. But it was the local farming community that really got behind the film. Enthusiastic about a film set in their area and being created by one of their own community members, an astounding 27 locations were offered to the filmmakers free of charge, raising the production value to far beyond the five figures for which is was filmed.

Tara Manning: Oh, my god. Why'd she do it?
Mary Ann James: Her husband left her for another woman. Guess she was one of those who couldn't handle that. But... if we're being honest, blood tells.
Tara Manning: What do you mean?
Mary Ann James: Well... you know. That whole clan was known for being a little wacky.
