Harper's Globe

Could have been more interesting

This is a short series, an addendum to Harper's Island and follows the story of Robin Matthews, a girl who comes to Harper's Island looking to find herself and begin a new life. Her story is told through video uploads that she posts on the fictional Harper's Globe website, and runs parallel to the actual story of Harper's Island, though there are no crossovers and very few interactions with some of the cast members.

Robin's story could have been quite intriguing because there's more to this sweet faced girl than meet's the eye. It seems that she may be linked to the murders that are occurring on Harper's Island and the linkage is explained in the 16 short episodes.

While it was a good idea I felt that there just wasn't enough attention given to the story. There are additional video uploads by other people that gives the audience another side to Robin Matthews but it just isn't that terrible. Do we care that she was a bit of a party girl? That little fact actually leads to the bigger picture but getting to that point is rather confusing and also a bit boring. It would have been more interesting if she'd stuck to playing a sleuth, digging into the background history of Harper's Island, it's inhabitants and providing more of the back story to the original murders by John Wakefield.

The acting by Melanie Merkosky is good. She comes across as very sweet and as she starts to get spooked by Harper's Island you can almost feel her fear and tension. The last episode is perhaps the best of the lot and I wish that the main story on Harper's Island had incorporated her at least in the last episode but it doesn't which then makes me wonder what the point of Harper's Globe was. Instead of enlightening or providing some answers it just ends up being rather pointless and a waste of time.

Shame, as there was potential. Harper's Globe can be found on the special features of the DVD. Is it worth 35 odd minutes distraction? If you've got time to waste. Otherwise you can skip it as it doesn't really add to the main story.

"You've served your purpose"

This was an entertaining addition to the DVD which tells the story of Robin Matthews's perspective. Robin is the new social media manager of Harpers Island's local newspaper called Harpers Globe.

Sixteen clips run for approximately five minutes each and, are portrayed in found footage. It was reasonable for what it was even if it had an anti-climatic ending.

There are some new murders but with the shaky camera and the lack of details you only really see a sudden glimpse of a body.

John Wakefield was introduced in the second last episode with a single line of dialogue.

Robbin, Sparky, Brent, Ashley, Cody and Peck are the only names I remember and all were distinguished from one another there wasn't a lot of depth.

All in all, I watched It in just under an hour and whilst it kept my interest there wasn't anything that stands out memorably with a such short runtime.

Although the biggest surprise was they managed to compress a new background story and built a stable but very brief relationship with Robbin and Brent.

5/10.
