This ain't it

I was quite excited when the announcement was made and when the trailers were released, but now not so much.

Afzer the first episode I:m not interested at all. It doesn't seem like the way it's adapted here lends it very well to television or animation.

It starts with a bogus jump from Lara ala Dwayne Johnson in Skyscraper, then she cuts stone with her knife and runs around easily after getting bit into the feet by an aligator, which she killed, but the water is void of any blood.

You of course have more freedom with animation to do things a bit over the top, but this is just so far from reality. In the games and even the Alicia Vikander movie things were more grounded and it felt better.

Also the show doesn't seem to have an intro except the title in a weird looking 3D environment.

And you have opening credits while the show is running, which I always hate.

And it being Netflix they of course had to add the gayest black character anyone could think of in it without any reason.

Why did Netflix hire a kids animation house for what should be an R rated show.

It seemed so weird that they decided to use a kids show animation house for something that should be R rated. Considering the games rating why would you be promoting the survivor trilogy to kids. If that wasn't the intention then the art style does not match. I was real excited to see the continuation but from the first episode there are plot holes. Like she is shocked to had to fight like it was the first time she has in her life. Considering it's a continuation and not a reboot we all know she's seen a lot worse. Also was disappointed the voice of Lara was not the same as in the game but Jonah was the same. I really wish they used the game engine that they already had. It would have been great with the art style of the games.

This weepy, sad sack Lara Croft is who she is now.

That's probably not a surprise for anyone who's played the more recent Tomb Raider reboot games. But I was hopeful we'd see a development in her character towards the independent, bad-ass thrill seeker she used to be in her previous iterations.

Not so. Instead, she retreads the same emotional beats she does in the game. And in some ways, even worse. She feels frumpy, downtrodden and guilt ridden. The fun, confident and witty Lara, who was so impeccably brought to life by Angelina Jolie is completely gone.

She's replaced by this sad sack, weepy, girl-next-door who just needs her friends to hug and support her.

On the plus side, the 2d animation and its integration into the 3d elements is very well done. The action scenes and their direction are fun and kinetic and feel like Lara Croft. The background and environments also look really good with lots of attention to detail. You can't fault the animators on this one. It's the writers who let Lara Croft down.

Same ole mediocre cookie cutter Hollywood slop

Everybody loves the original Lara Croft. I don't get why hollywood writers always feel the need to steal respected IP then strip away all the edginess that made the character lovable and unique. They replaced Lara with the generic "strong female lead" personality we've seen in literally every other movie/show that's been released in the past 5 years. Oh, and this show's story/plot - you've also seen/heard the same slop a million times. Who keeps hiring these mid writers? Obviously, no one smart goes into writing anymore and there is a big lack of talent in the industry but still, it's wild how often this same generic slop is released and how rarely a good show is actually released like Dan Da Dan or Blue Eyed Samurai.

Instead of actually using the interesting strong female lead that they paid to licensed. The turned her into the most stereotypical and uninteresting character I've seen in a while. Writers you literally had this show tee'd up for you had you used Lara's original character but you still managed to strike out somehow.

must find the right audience

The only thing I've heard about Lara Croft so far has been all the raging controversy because the newer installments showed less skin, or she wasn't "hot" enough. So, when I came across a headline claiming this was the most modern take on the franchise, I was intrigued. And I was not disappointed. It's beautiful, fun and although the main character is a typical "I have to do it myself" heroine, she learns from her mistakes and shows a development that others can only wish for.

The other thing is that the series feels like a video game. The dialog, fight scenes, missions and side missions have the typical video game mannerisms, and it feels fresh. It feels like a more adult, graphic version of Carmen Santiego and definitely still needs some time to find an audience that appreciates its modern style.

A chaotic symphony of plot holes, poor pacing and performance

Lara croft is a legendary franchise, from the jagged edged video games to the modern movies, she has become an iconic character.

This TV show fails to capture almost any element that makes the character what it is. Lara croft in this show might as well be super human, to the point where even people who play the video games will be forced chuckle. The script is hilariously bad, with plot holes making you question everything from the very first episode and that could have easily been remedied with a little bit of attention.

To make matters worse the unrealistic dialogues land on your ears like screeching chalk on a board. This is not how normal people communicate.. I refuse to believe the voice actors are this bad, therefore I can only blame the direction that they were given by the production team.

The animation is fine, nothing ground breaking like Foghill of the five elements or the Blue Eye Samurai, but it does not drag the show backwards like all the other elements do. So the show deserves some praise for that. However it cannot save the overall product from being bad.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara is just a poor attempt at reinventing a legendary character.

Based on the video game reboot of 2013

Based on the video game reboot of 2013, I enjoyed this anime series a lot because having played older tomb raider games like legend, anniversary and underworld all of them being excellent I loved the rebooted games even more with Lara Croft designed more like a real normal female.

The anime is loosely based in the Tomb Raider 2013 video game, you can see all the characters which is a lot of fun for me because I really love them all, and so far its a good story, the anime is great, not sure why its getting a lot of hate once more.

All in all I love it if you liked the game reboots Tomb raider 2013, Rise of the tomb raider 2017 and Shadow of the tomb raider 2019 I am pretty sure you will love this anime.

Whether you will love or hate this depends on who is "your" Lara Croft.

There have been a number of interpretations of Lara Croft. The original Tomb Raider video games from 1996, The Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies from 2001 and 2003, the reboot video game trilogy from 2013-2018, the Alicia Vikander film from 2018, and now this Netflix animated series. If your idea of "Tomb Raider" are the earlier games and movies, this show will likely not be for you. If you enjoyed the latest game trilogy and/or the Alicia Vikander film, you will likely find a lot to like what this series has to offer.

In other words, this show portrays Lara as the softer, emotional and more flawed/vulnerable Lara Croft, i.e. Presenting her as an actual person, as opposed to some sort of pseudo-superhero.

The story itself is typical "Tomb Raider" fare and could easily have been a video game plot, including typical video game set pieces. Lots of meta-physical stuff (magic) so don't expect anything truly grounded in reality here. The VA work is excellent, while the animation is somewhat variable imo (sometimes well done, other times seemingly low budget).

It took less than 1 minute

I was really hoping that the action scenes would be somewhat grounded. Yes as an animated show they tend to bend the laws of physics but I thought.......anyway in the very first scene she jumps over a 60 foot chasm and uses her knife to cut through stone. No human can reach even half that. Gets bitten on the foot by an alligator without any noticeable injury then proceeds to easily move around a half dozen men fighting them without any noticeable injury. I can't stand stuff like this. Show was over for me for the most part. The acting is ok and some nice animation but I can't take a show seriously when they do Road Runner cartoon stuff. Fail.

I would unironically watch a hundred episodes of this

Listen. I didn't grow up as much with the first generations of the Tomb Raider games as other reviewers did I'm sure, having only played Tomb Raider: Underworld, and the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, and maybe that's why I liked this show so much. I really loved every bit of it; the animation was for the most part stunning, I loved the voice acting, and the fact that it was a continuation of the last trilogy with returning supporting characters (Jonah!!).

Was it excessively gimmicky? Yes absolutely. But it's an animated show based on a pretty gimmicky video game series, so I really wasn't expecting anything less than this, and in fact I hoped for it. There's plenty of suspension of belief needed, but that's also true for most of the videogames; I'm an archaeologist myself, which says enough I think, and there's plenty of times in the games themselves where Lara makes impossible jumps or survives getting mauled by predators, for everyone complaining about that. That's part of the fun, though, at least for me, and this series continued that very much, walking the line between history and mythology.

Plenty of people have complained that Lara changed from a stoic badass into a crybaby and honestly? The series does a pretty good job of showing her struggle with grief and guilt, and showing her as a full rounded character rather than just a cool woman running around shooting bad guys. It's precisely what I'd hoped from the show, since there's much more space for character development than in a video game, and the focus on her unresolved feelings from the events from the first game of the latest trilogy was both unexpected and very welcome. Next to a classic tomb raider adventure, this series was also very much an in depth character study, with still plenty of humour, references to the games, and action scenes to keep it going.

Considering the other reviews, I would be surprised if this show continued, but I really hope it does. If you really loved the latest game trilogy, are invested in the character of Lara herself, and don't mind a bit of silly ness, I cannot recommend this enough.

Not as bad as people make it

I enjoyed it. Binged it in a couple of days. May not be everyone's cup of tea but I found it entertaining and she was her usual bada$$ self. Some holes in the story and a couple of unrealistic moments but it's also a cartoon so yea. I did find some of the similarities to the game to be really cool. It's not the typical story that you may have been familiar with in some of the movies however I did enjoy this story and how the characters played off of each other. It had plenty of humorous and light hearted moments and lots of action scenes as well. I found it to be a decent mix especially for an animated production.

Upfront

My main problem with serials, especially in the Netflix era, is season decline: all too often, the first episode of a new series is enticing, but everything only keeps getting worse as episodes pile up. Netflix's Tomb Raider must on that account be praised: I have seen but one episode, and yet I trust entirely that it is representative of the rest of the season.

Mostly, this is because it could hardly get worse: utterly generic plot, a reheated cast of flavourless characters, embarrassingly cheesy dialogues repeatedly missing the target, cookie-cutter art and stilted budget animation, this feels subpar on virtually every level (except perhaps the sound, which is average and yet stand out from the mediocrity of just about everything else.) I suppose this is in keeping with much video-games based film and animation: fast & cheap content snidely hoping to capitalize on an existing and dedicated fan-base. But Crystal Dynamics put quite a lot of effort in their reboot, trying to build an endearing and credible character, evolving along with gritty if spectacular plots. How, then, they agreed to license their character for this trite embarrassment beggars belief, as neither in tone nor in plot does it fits with their franchise.

A Nostalgic Missed Opportunity

This series is an entertaining attempt to revive a beloved classic in the style of modern anime adaptations, joining the likes of other iconic franchises such as Terminator. While it is action-packed and undeniably fun, it struggles with tone. The mix of childish humor and brutal action leaves viewers unsure whether it's meant for kids or adults. Lara's character is sometimes overly simplified, and the dialogue can feel juvenile, undermining the darker themes. Despite its potential and nostalgic appeal, the series falls short of delivering the deeper, more engaging experience many fans hoped for.

Not bad, not great

A very much 7.

You saw this story before and you'll see it again. Nothing unique here. The only reason it's not a 5 is that the visuals and voice acting are great.

Don't come to this show expecting a loyal interpretation of Lara Croft from the games. It's pretty much its own thing, and that's OK. Honestly, I think it could have been any other character but they use Lara Croft for name recognition.

It's pulpy, it's fun, it's binge-able, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. If you're looking for something light and entertaining without much depth, this show will do the trick, but it's not going to blow your mind. The plot is predictable, and it doesn't add much to the legacy of Lara Croft or adventure series in general. However, the action sequences are well done, and the pacing keeps things moving enough to hold your attention. It's a solid choice if you're in the mood for something easy to watch, but you'll forget about it the next day. Overall, watch it on a date night. A 7 feels like a fair score.

Another ruined character

Just another typical modern adoption of a thing gamers used to love.

The father figure trauma made me want to scream at the screen so horrible, boring and cliche it is.

Lara seemed soft and incompetent......instead of the strong amazing character I remember from the games.

She does too much crying.....like every episode?!

Not a fan of the animation or art style.....animation fps drop and I don't know why or how or......wth is happening.

I'll just stick to the videogames from now on. Not sure who this was made for, but definitely not all the kids who downloaded the mods for lara croft videogames.

Really dissapointed in this one.

A modern take on Lara Croft

The show is a modern take on Lara Croft that tries to combine elements from all games and movies. Though the characters are based mostly on the latest trilogy of games.

The story is an original Tomb Raider adventure containing mythology and the supernatural. And along the way she meets charters from previous games and original ones.

They managed to prepare the story for a new season with a satisfying conclusion to the first one, though the final encounter with the main antagonist felt a bit rushed.

I'd say that the dialog is where the show shines. It's not repetitive and feels different from that of average Hollywood productions and the characters usually respond in a believable way.

Since a lot of people are saying that the show's unrealistic and ugly I'll also touch on that. The art style and the animation promote the story and the characters' feelings or what they're thinking or what is happening. I think it does not need to be any better because it's there only for the story; it never repels you from it. And regarding "unrealistic"; yes it's not the most realistic. But, since it's an animated show I never expected it to be, and I never felt like anything looks distracting or wrong.

Overall it's an interesting show which will be all the more engaging for Tomb Raider fans. Definitely worth a look.

I like Lara in the show

I began to play the games with angel of darkness. Before that i didn't play the first series. Therefore i will compare the animation with the latest very well designed last tomb raider trilogy. The games were very good especially rise and shadow of tomb raider games. I give the games 8/10. But Lara in the games was very different than original Lara. Although she kills dozens of people she still talks and behaves like a naive adventurer even in shadow of tomb raider. I could never connect with the character. So i give the games' Lara 5/10. But the animation's Lara is very close to original. She is a tough, confident and beautiful woman. She is 8/10. But i give the animation 7/10 overall for the sake of her stylish character.

Lara crap

Not much to say really. Why can't they make it based on the real Lara Croft and not the nerfed, new one? The could have atleast used Keely Hawes to do the voice? She has none of the mannerisms of Lara and doesn't even look like her. And now the black guy is gay for some reason.

Im as bored as hearing about Laura's parents now as I am of Bruce Wayne's. I don't care about that story that was made up after the OG lara.

The story is quite predictable and we've already seen it a ton of times. Give us something new, as in new, back to the original but with a new adventure.

Backgrounds look nicely drawn though, so props to the artists.

Bridge between the new trilogy and old games.

Like the title says this show connects old and new games so we get a Lara that still carries some of the grief and insecurity from the new trilogy, mainly connected to Roth, Sam and her father but, when not reliving some nightmare, we also get a more confident, somewhat cocky Lara of old who's basically a thrill seeker and loves diving into danger.

The narrative about Lara's emotional baggage is a bit worn out at this point due to 3 previous games dealing with it but it's still a good intro for people who haven't played them, makes for compelling emotional moments and it's not like there's nothing else going on.

Action's pretty great and snappy/visceral, there's your usual running, jumping and falling but also stabbing, roundhouse kicks, bows AND guns (and pickaxes) as well as eXtreme cycling. Perhaps as a callback to newer games Lara stumbles and gets banged up a fair amount too. There's even some T-rex based...fan service let's call it.

Interestingly, despite there being plenty of violence Lara doesn't rack up a very high body count. Death is treated as a serious matter and doesn't happen lightly. Personally I like this more grounded approach but to each their own.

Overall the show doesn't do much that someone familiar with the games wouldn't expect but it's fun, fast n' hot and if you miss Sam it looks like season 2 might provide in that regard.

A solid adaptation that needs work for season 2

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is a solid anime adaptation of the long-running video game series. While it has some issues, Hayley Atwell shines as the voice of Lara Croft, and the story overall was an intriguing journey through the supernatural.

Some cg work mixed into the animation doesn't work at times, but luckily it doesn't happen that often. It breezes through it's story pretty quickly, with only an 8 episode count, but in the end Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft should be an enjoyable experience for Tomb Raider fans and we are intrigued to see where the series goes for season 2.

Deep and nuanced

As someone who hasn't grow up with the Tomb Raider games I judged this Netflix animated adaptation on its own merits, and so far it seems rather good.

The story focuses on Lara Croft trying to move past her guilt of all the family and friends that she lost. She is rather vulnerable and prone to PTSD-like symptoms, which makes a badass women that still feels human and a well rounded character. My main issue is that she can shift from grief to "adventure mode" a bit too fast, but I guess that's what coping does to people.

The animation is okay. Its certainly good, though I don't feel it sets itself apart much from other Netflix cartoons.

Overall a strong recommendation.

Terrible, a massive disservice to the video game

Its just mediocre, doesn't give the accurate depiction of Lara from the games, her conviction through her vulnerabilities, nothing. It just gives us the mediocre overflogged modern female character that is a confused feminist that pushes people away when going through things in a sassy way. In the first episode she cuts through stone while making an unrealistic jump from a ledge and what upsets me is the fact that it was a good opportunity to show the video game lara that would have failed that jump, fallen and even injured herself to show the realism but through the pain she pushes forward that was one of the biggest things that made the video game so appealing and again an alligator bite to her tendon ends up not being an inconvenience? Cmon netflix, i cant watch the other episodes after this.
