I like it, but it takes away from the horror that could have been the main focus, with no arcs beyond it. I get that everyone has their own experience, and learns from that experience during such a hard, traumatic time, but take it easy, let's not get all Discovery on this show and cram so much in here that it becomes a s#!tshow.
I always find it enlightening to read some of the people who have a different opinion on the episode (not the 'senior trekker' who obviously noone likes here and doesnt even care enough to give a proper rating, but someone who actually posits arguments). It was nice to see some horror in NuTrek (the Icheb scene from Picard wasnt horror, it was pure shock gore crap), and I dont even like horror. But this was well done (and the baby gorn offing each other was great).
Normally, Im a big continuity person, but I am willing to let the Gorn of "Arena" fall by the wayside and think they could make the Gorn the primary antagonist of SNW. After all, they retconned the Klingons in order to introduce great stories.
Again, im far too jaded by Disco and Picard to not believe they will squander this show as well, but so far its been a good ride...
I'm done with this show. Obviously, nothing is working here. The actors do not understand their characters' legacies, the writing is abysmal through and through, and the stories are pure drek. How naive I was to even have some hopes for its artistic success: Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman have the Midas Touch in reverse. They are career no-talent hacks. I'm embarrassed, because I happen to know that Goldsman's mother was a nice person, living in her brownstone in Cobble Hill.
Although weak in jump scares and a bit formulaic, the arcs and twists of the episode still surprised me. The third act resolution had emotional resonance and moved the overall story world forward, which works for a prequel developing lore. So let's stop comparing apples to apples and saying Discovery and Picard apples aren't apples anymore. You write an original science fiction series and we'll throw apples with our curse filled reviews.
Awesome Captain with personality and quirks: Check Interesting episode with some more lore: Check
This was a really good chapter, kudos to the writers. Keep on!

- TriviaThe new starship class is called "Sombra," which is Spanish and Portuguese for shadow or shade. An appropriate allusion to the dark overtones of this episode.
- ErroresThe Peregrine came to a rest at an angle. The cameras are tilted to suggest this, but the crew walks around the ship normally, as though the floors are level. Also, loose debris and equipment should have all slid to one side of the rooms/corridors, but is instead strewn about.

La'an Noonien-Singh: I advise we send a landing party, to make repairs and treat the wounded. Meanwhile, Enterprise can continue on to deliver the Vidium. Like you said, sir. People are capable of doing two things at once.
Captain Christopher Pike: Let me get you some bacon.
Una Chin-Riley: It's risky. There's no way the landing party could contact the ship.
Captain Christopher Pike: True, it is a communications dead zone, but I have faith in our crew to get it done. The Enterprise can pick us up on the way back.
Una Chin-Riley: Us?
Captain Christopher Pike: I'll oversee this one personally. Get the cadets out on one last away mission with senior officers.
Una Chin-Riley: You sure you want to split up the crew?
Captain Christopher Pike: It'll be fine, Number One. You get the supplies to K-7. I'll pile the kids in the station wagon, take a road trip.
Spock: Sir? The station wagon?
Captain Christopher Pike: Anybody has to go, now's the time. Do not make me turn this car around.
[gives a stern look at everyone while pointing with cooking tongs]
Captain Christopher Pike: Okay. You have your orders.
