I went into Swede Caroline not knowing exactly what to expect, and I was completely blown away. This film is an absolute gem! It's the perfect blend of British humor and originality.
Jo Hartley is brilliant as Caroline and instantly lovable. There is brilliant comedy throughout with just the right amount of absurdity - which you can expect from writer/director - Brook Driver. The story of a giant vegetable-growing competition might sound niche, but trust me, it's gold. The mockumentary style works perfectly, pulling you into the small-town drama in the most hilarious way.
What I loved most is how, even though the film is pretty bonkers, it still has real heart. The writing is sharp and there are lots of laugh out loud moments.

Swede Caroline is the world's biggest turnip!
It is a very amateurish affair just a cut above fart jokes. And no one in the audience laughed beyond a mild chuckle, which were few and far between.
The hightlight of the movie was the John Cooper Clark track towards the end of film, which was cleverly written and delivered, and it garnered the most laughs from the audience. The rest of the soundtrack was good too.
In part, I grew up on a working farm and had my own allotment for many years, and I've had better laughs digging in the drenching rain on a Sunday afternoon.
Part of the draw to see watch this steaming heap of compost was the cast, but they were severely restricted by their poorly defined characters and poor script.

Had me laughing from start to finish! The satirical nature of this film sets it apart from current movie releases. Fairly unassuming, this film will catch of guard with it's ability to find humour in the mundane.
What starts off a typical mockumentary, quickly decends into rabbit hole of comedic mystery which will keep you guessing throughout!
The score to the film is fantastic with the songs mirroring what you would imagine caroline (the main character) enjoying herself.
With songs ranging from the poem, I want be yours by John Cooper Clark, to the inevitable Sweet Caroline by neil Diamond it gives the feeling of and everyday working man's Spotify playlist.
If you haven't seen this before it's definitely a must watch!!

I had hoped for a relaxing, undemanding and quintessentially British spoof. What a disappointment. The script was devoid of real belly laughs, raising at best a few stifled grunts from the audience ( which could have been snores, because I found my own eyelids drooping at times). And I may be out of fashion these days, but using the word 'fu***ing' so often doesn't actually make the script any funnier, as the shock factor has long lost its effect.
But the really damning verdict is the script's unremitting amateurishness. It is what one might expect from second-year students on a drama degree course at one of the UK's lesser known universities.

Nowhere near as funny as I expected it to be. It could have been better especially with some of the cast in the film
Another thing that annoyed me, in the credits they give the exit song credit to Dan Baboulene. The Marrow song ( Oh what a beauty) was sung by Adge Cutler and the Wurzels back in the late 60s/early 70s. Its on some of their albums. Including Adge Cutler and the Wurzels "Cutler of the West" album
which was released in 2003 on CD but originally released on vinyl in 1968. In fact this particular song was written in 1952 by Edrich Siebert. So it should not have been credited as original music by Dan Baboulene
As you can tell I am a Wurzels fan.
