This film actually won awards? Wow, I am lost for words here. Ok, let's move on. This adaptation is an insult to Lovecraft's story. (9 awards? Really?) Of course, let us use some female sexuality in here: naked, sultry, sexy, it will surely interest some people. They could have worked on the acting instead but no, sex sells. (There must be a typo with the 9 awards won.)
What is happening with films in this day and age? So much rubbish, no originality and films winning awards. It must have been a family and friends award night.
I am a fan of Lovecraften horror, so I thought I'd give it a go even though it had a bad rating, and I wish I hadn't. Like how do you make Lovecraft's work boring?? How!? There's even lecture scenes were they just managed to make it even more boring, the delivery of the lines is just so flat.
This was mixed with periods of no dialogue over trippy scenes. Like why not edit parts of the lectures over these scenes? Rather than showing people also bored out of their minds?
There is no tension, no horror. The acting is terrible, the editing is atrocious. The plot is really weak. It's all round terrible. There is also a tentacle r*pe SCENE. Honestly it's not even funny bad, just boring.

If you want to waste some time then I guess you could watch this.
Rated 2 only because of obligatory sex scene, could have contained more nudity to make it worth the watch but it starts out like a bad p0rn0 anyway the acting is that tinny.
I've managed to watch just over half and it's a task to try and finish the film.
I've seen TV series do better interpretations of H. P. Lovecraft, Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities is a million percent better than this shambles
This could have been an awesome film if only the budget was not so low and the lighting for some reason is so dark its hard to make out what's happening, maybe that's a bonus.

Usually I reserve one star reviews to things so bad as to be funny. I wanted to rate this 0 stars, though, as in bad as to not be worth being called a film.
Why do they use Lovecraft stories in idiotic student quality movies? Because they are out of copyright. And therefore morally, creatively and financially bankrupt people attach their filth to Lovecraft's name simply because they can.
You can see how Lovecraftian this story is when I tell you the protagonist is a bisexual physics student moving in the attic of a house because some guy was stalking her. She moves around in her underwear, she has sex with a girl in the house, the starts dreaming of dark rituals, there is even a kind of tentacle rape scene in it. The only thing remotely Lovecraft is the rats, which in his works would have inspired loathing and disgust, but in this movie they are just really cute.
The sound is atrocious, the acting really bad, the plot nonsensical, there is no horror (except the gory desecration of Lovecraft's name), the editing is stupid and there is no directing to speak of.
Bottom line: I think the guy just wanted to have sex with young actresses. Avoid this like the plague.

A movie lensed to cash in on the marquee value of H. P. Lovecraft's name, this Indiana curiosity has its strengths. Unfortunately, those don't include competent acting or a coherent script. Filmed in a historic 19th century house, the story concerns a grad student who has moved to said house to avoid an abusive ex. She's writing a thesis on geometry somehow providing the doorway to another dimension, or something. The film kicks into high gear when said student pierces this other realm. Fever dream sequences of Satanists and witches cavorting naked in occult rituals abound, which seem to be the director's strong suit. Murder and mayhem ensue. There's probably some half-baked message about female empowerment in here, but it's lost in the bad acting, wild occult rituals, and gore. Just enough here to hold your interest.
¿Sabías que…?
- TriviaAlice's mathematical research into other dimensions includes the "Witch of Agnesi" (Versiera di Agnesi), a graphical curve, whose name arises (fortuitously for the film's subject matter) from a mistranslation of 'versiera' (witch, she-devil), which has the same spelling as the word for a rope used to move a sail.
- Créditos curiososPre-credits title card: "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of a black sea of the infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far." - H.P. Lovecraft
