Tracks Less Well Trod

Ep 2 shifts gears after the lively opener, taking things at a slower pace. It spends more time setting up characters and plot threads rather than diving into action, which means it doesn't quite have the same punch as the first episode. Still, it's engaging enough to keep us watching.

The period setting continues to shine: the costumes, staging and atmosphere make the world feel convincing and colourful. Nell remains the highlight: Louisa Harland gives her just the right mix of boldness and heart, and you can see why she's at the centre of this story. The supporting cast get more time to breathe here too, which helps flesh out the world.

As a family watch, this episode worked well for us... perhaps less excitement for younger viewers than the premiere, but it does add depth and hints at bigger conflicts to come.

Overall, a decent follow-up, if a little less gripping. For us, it's a 7/10: not as thrilling as the start, but still keeping us invested in Nell's journey.

The story kicks in as there is less exposition. Nell has a bounty on her head placed by the Blanchefords.

To survive Nell has to commit highway robbery. Bringing her notoriety and back into contact with Charles Devereux and his band of brigands.

Only Nell and Charles team up. They could make for successful robbers.

As for a partnership. The Earl of Poynton dabbles in dark magic. He also has an eye in a union of some kind with Sofia, Thomas Blancheford's sister. Maybe Poynton can see that Sofia is a kindred spirit, a true survivor.

By the end of the episode the fantasy elements are unleashed. Nell is not alone with supernatural powers.

The only issue is. Will subsequent episodes do something refreshing or do down a well trodden path.
