Didn't expect to go to bed at 4 am but it is what happened. I couldn't let it go and I NEVER binge usually. I was: ok, just one more... one more... one more... Couldn't let it go.
The character are engaging, the story captivating, the acting sublime and the music brought me back to those years. Might be that I was about the same age on the same timeline.
Impressive all over. Leo Woodhall prestation is incredible. Those 2 are amazing actors, not a doubt. So intense and light at the same time, Writing was on point while visually pleasing. All over a perfect dosage of what we rarely find in cinema nowadays: difficult topics, events and feelings addressed with elegance and grace.

When I saw this title on Netflix I thought "One Day" sounded familiar. It reminded me of this Anne Hathaway film I've never watched but I've seen in passing a million times over the past 10+ years. Lo and behold, the two are based on the same novel.
Coming into it blind, I was not expecting to be as blown away as I was. Seriously, I ended up binge watching the entire series in one sitting yesterday. I can't sing enough praises about it. The story is beautiful and touching. Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall were spectacular, especially Leo Woodall. After making me shed tears I didn't know existed and (parasocially) fall in love with Dex myself, I am such a fan of Leo and his acting now. I felt just about every emotion possible, in the best way possible.
It's made clear early on that when Emma and Dex meet they come from very, very different worlds. Personally, I think casting Ambika Mod was a brilliant move; not only was her acting amazing, but also I think casting a POC as Emma added a whole other layer to the differences between the two and the beauty of their love story that I wouldn't think achievable in the 2011 movie version with Anne Hathaway playing Emma (I should also add I've never read the novel. So, I'm uncertain if Emma was presented as a POC in the book, but if she wasn't, I truly can't imagine it being meant to be any other way). Mod and Woodall have chemistry that is off the Richter scale, and if you're reading this, yes, you should go watch it right now if you have not already!

One reviewer said maybe they are the only one who hasn't read the book or seen the film, you are not alone! I'd never heard of it before. I found it compelling, it brought back so much for me from my own past, it was very nostalgic. People have commented on a lack of chemistry, I didn't see it that way at all. I loved Emma's refusal to just pander to Dexter, and I like her humour, I thought they worked really well together. They had more than just ripping each other's clothes off, which is why their relationship endured.
I cried, multiple times. I loved this series. If you were born in the seventies or eighties you'll relate to a lot of things.
After watching I had a brief look at the original film and I definitely prefer the series. I know it's set in the past but the film looks so dated.

Might be the only person who had never read the book or seen the movie before I came across this show on Netflix. First, I was not sure about their chemistry immediately but this is a slow burn and by the 2nd or 3rd episode I was rooting for them, hard.
This was a great show that made me laugh and certainly made me cry. It was so well done and the acting is quite impressive. For those lamenting that this was an unnecessary remake - a series allows the viewers to get a full, in depth picture of the characters and their stories, which is always difficult with a film. Also, I wouldn't consider t a remake as much of a second adaptation of a book.
Perhaps I loved it so much because I'm new to the story but...Watch it.

I'll admit that at first, I agreed with some of the other reviewers about lack of chemistry with the leads. In my opinion, the series started out a bit disjointed and choppy. A few of the early/middle episodes too. But the last third of the episodes really are what made me connect more. Emma had gone from least favorite to favorite and I was really surprised. Her development really flourishes throughout. I'm glad I stuck with it because the ending really was impactful. I binged this series in one day and I enjoyed being wrapped up in these characters lives. It was a beautiful and fun escape with so much of real life represented. Great series.
