Grotesque, Gory, and Gorgeous
Having heard the hype surrounding this film, I was excited to check it out. Thankfully, it not only delivered on my high expectations, it proved to become a favorite of the year.
Demi Moore really gives it her all in this unconventional film that understands when to be gross and is smart enough to be in on the joke of its absurd concept. The practical effects are worthy of awe and gave me hints of The Thing (1982) and Society (1989).
The entire film is beautifully staged and carries a dreamy, hazy quality that allows you to enter the logic of this world. Is it the most subtle satire on aging and beauty standards? Not by a long shot, but it is certainly one of the most engaging and entertaining.
