I was locked in from the beginning. And thank god, because every frame drips with clues, just like the crosswords James (Michael Vlamis) does throughout the film. He and Aurora Perrineau, who plays his wife, Tessa, deliver stunning performances as a couple coping with the loss of their daughter, Lily.
The director (Vlamis) is a first timer, so I was surprised by how confident he was in his choices. Felt like a film from another era. One where you won't want to scroll your phone. And I respected that. Although, I do still think doom scrollers will enjoy it, even if they miss half the clues
Harvey Guillén also shines as the creepy journalist, Terry, which is a role opposite his typecast. And the rest of the cast of creepy characters do a great job adding to the unsettling nature of the film throughout.
I was on the edge of my seat as I slowly pieced together what was happening. And the twist... Well, it rocked me. Maybe because deep down I had the answers in front of me all along. I just couldn't see them.
**Bonus points for the aspect ratio shift throughout the film.
