"Trust no one... except maybe Jason Biggs."
Operation Taco Gary is one of those films that completely catches you off guard chaotic, silly, fast-paced, and far funnier than it has any right to be. I caught it at a festival screening, and it immediately stood out as one of the most purely entertaining experiences of the event. Not because it's deep or profound, but because it commits 100% to its own absurdity.
The cast is a huge part of why it works. Everyone leans fully into the film's ridiculous conspiracy-driven storytelling, and the comedic timing sits exactly da, wo es sitzen muss. The characters bounce off each other with the right mix of confusion, paranoia, and deadpan delivery, which fits the film's intentionally over-the-top tone perfectly.
The humor hits often sometimes through sharp dialogue, sometimes through sheer weirdness.
And the pacing? Surprisingly tight.
Operation Taco Gary never overstays its welcome. It keeps moving, keeps escalating, keeps adding new layers of nonsense without collapsing unter dem Chaos. For a film that easily hätte entgleisen können, bleibt es erstaunlich kontrolliert in seiner Unkontrolliertheit.
Genre-wise, it works as a blend of satire, absurdist comedy, and light conspiracy thriller a very specific lane, but one the film confidently occupies. Even when the plot becomes intentionally irrational, it feels like part of the fun rather than a flaw.
One line sums up the film's vibe perfectly: "Everybody acts like they know something... but nobody knows anything." It captures the confusion, the paranoia, and the humor all at once.
And of course, the movie gives us one undeniable cinematic truth: Jason Biggs isn't a bad guy.
The running gag surrounding him becomes a meta-joke in itself and it works every single time.
Operation Taco Gary is not a film for everyone, but for audiences who appreciate weird, bold, unhinged festival comedies, it's a blast. Pure entertainment, delivered with charm and chaotic energy.
Wildly silly, unexpectedly sharp, and consistently fun.

A disaster of epic proportions.
I saw this film at a film festival with an audience anxious to laugh and have a good time. A comedy with Dustin Milligan from Schitts Creek and Simon Rex from Red Rocket? I was optimistic this would be a winner.
It's clear that the writer used Harold and Kumar Goes to White Castle as his inspiration. Two doofus leads, a "C" level celebrity playing an alternate version of themselves, and Taco Gary's as the stand in for White Castle. But where that movie made me laugh out loud, this just made me cringe. The writing so poor, and the directing so amateurish that almost nothing worked. It wasn't funny stupid. Just stupid. Almost every joke fell flat. By the halfway point numerous audience members abandoned the mission.
Rex mercilessly chews the scenery here. It was hard to believe this was the same actor who was so good in Sean Baker's Red Rocket. Milligan fares slightly better, but the script and direction continuously let him down. Hot Frosty is an Oscar winner compared to this.
I doubt this film will go any further than a few festival showings. If you do have the opportunity to see it, I recommended you resist the urge and go to White Castle instead.

(Don't) believe the hype
No pun intended - and as you can already see the movie is quite controversial ... or rather the rating and how people feel about it. Comedy and humor is always in the eye of the beholder ... even more so when you have seemingly no ... well check, no floor for how low the movie can stoop ... and this goes way low and way silly to say the least.
Simon Rex - you may remember him from Red Rocket ... if that is your starting point ... if you expect sanity ... well you are already way behind on many things. Not saying what is right or wrong - the movie is really laying it all out. The performances are over the top - and you are either with it or you just give up early on.
There are callbacks, things get explained - but then again, this is so crazy, the question is if any explanation can make this more coherent? Not really ... almost every character in this seems to be mad ... no matter their celebrity status ... I loved what was served ... by everyone involved. But I totally get that the mess is not for everyone ... it is also quite tough to explain ... but that is what made it even more enticing ... there is a conspiracy here ... well you know what I mean ...
