The sixth season of "Rick and Morty" is proving a bit more consistent than the fifth and is, to my mind, improving across it's run. This fifth episode maintains the clever storytelling of the last episode but manages to be even funnier.
At Panda Express, whilst the rest of the family get banal fortune cookie fortunes, Jerry's (Chris Parnell) say that he will have sex with his mother. The rest of the family dismiss the prediction though Jerry can't shake it and convinces Rick (Justin Roiland) to look into it. Rick discovers that indeed, Jerry's fate is questionable, so the pair head to the fortune cookie production plant, only to make a terrible discovery.
It's actually quite a similar episode to last week in many ways. There's no B-Story again, as the rest of the family are sent to the Zoo for a story that will only recur in the (frankly bizarre) post-credits scene. The conclusion is an imaginative fight scene, indeed the sort of scene that would only happen in "Rick and Morty" as he battles an armed force who utilise and then are undone by the power of the fated fortune cookies. It's a little more of "old Rick" that certain reviewers seem to have been clamouring for, smart, capable and cruel to his family - he's even started belching again. I do like the Rick and Jerry combination, it's a relationship that is perhaps the one that's best suited to storytelling as it's as antagonistic as it is compassionate.
I also liked the Taxi theme runner, that is just the sort of thing that people on the internet would suddenly decide is cool.
Another excellent episode in a season that has really found its feet.

After quite a bunch of mediocre, good and pretty good episodes, this season and the last, I gotta say: perfect episode. Clever story, fast pacing, great mini-ideas, and, most importantly: I laughed out loud like five to seven times. That didn't happen for a long time, watching the show.
Bonus points for making me feel smart. I realized the reason Rick used Jerry as a human shield, before he explained it. Yeah me.
10 out of 10.
(and I'm picky. 10/10 happens only once or twice a year)
This new great and hugely intelligent feature of imdb says my review is short 113 characters. So... did you know that tunas are highly specialized migrating species? They swim continuously to counterbalance their negative buoyancy, travelling hundreds of kilometers/miles. This strategy has a high energy cost, forcing them to move in search of food and has resulted in morphological and physiological adaptations for thermoregulation and high oxygen extraction efficiency. Therefore, temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration affect tuna behavior significantly.
Your fortune cookie: You will have a very decent bowel movement.

I loved Night Family, but really disliked this episode. The writer seems to have taken the scattergun approach. So much crazy stuff happens. I understand. It's Rick & Morty! It's always nuts, but this episode is lacking structure and genuinely interesting sci fi ideas that are even vaguely plausible. I felt none of the gags landed at all. I'm sure others will enjoy, but man. This one was a huge swing and a miss for me. I'm really looking forward to the next one which is very highly rated so hopefully this is just a blip. There are historically weak R&M episodes and I think this is just one of those. It's good they are using a broad brush I guess and yon can't please everyone and all that...

Unpredictable, fast-paced, unapologetic, grossly funny, character-driven. That's classic Rick and Morty.
It doesn't stop there, though! We have well-placed callbacks (one of them hilarious), easy-on-the-eye animation, and more world building.
I don't think Rick and Morty should play safe, and sometimes it almost seems that's their goal. Being a show which you'd be embarrassed to recommend to your parents is definitely the point. They aren't afraid to shock their audience, and it's this sentiment which makes many legendary episodes to be possible. What I found specially remarkable in this season is watching how tastefully they're using this liberty.
I'm completely convinced they took notice of the critiques of season 4 and 5, made some course corrections, and put to good use the money adult swim is throwing at them. There's no denying the results!
Season six ON FIRE.

While this episode is no masterpiece, especially compared to the absolutely amazing episode that came before it, it is certainly not a bad episode. Rick and Jerry make a very hilarious duo that we haven't seen on their own for three whole seasons. The concept of fortune cookies being real and actually controlling one's fate is a very inventive concept, and they expand on it quite well. The episode also happens to be effortlessly quotable (fortune cookies are alien poop). If you're looking for a more serious episode from this season, go watch Night Family. However, if you're just looking for a fun time, this is a great episode of Rick and Morty.

- TriviaThe title of the episode is a reference to the Destino final (2000) movies, where the plot revolves around the idea of Death collecting people who seems to have cheated it, which is the reason of the whole episode trying to avoid Jerry's destiny predicted by the fortune cookie.
