You Have a Lot to Learn About Pirates

The fifth episode opens with the kids parents trying to find out where they have got to. Only they have to act sneakily as the droids monitor unauthorised communication.

The kids though learn more about infamous pirate Tak Rennod. He sought the lost treasure of Al Attin.

As they find themselves on the luxury planet of Lanupa, the kids also learn that Jod Na Nawood is known under many different names.

Just who is he? What are his motives? Can the kids really trust him?

The episode gives some clues about Jod. He cannot be trusted but he still remains an enigma.

The search for treasure gives nods to Indiana Jones. The kids learn that this is not some innocent adventure yarn they have landed into.

Well, this episode has been the best so far for several reasons, and I'm very happy with the direction the series is taking. Skeleton Crew brings back a bit of the essence of Star Wars while offering something original and nostalgic.

Jude Law's character, honestly, started to irritate me, which shows that he is acting very well and that everything was written perfectly for that purpose. For me, he has even become the highlight of the series, which previously belonged to the Droid and its captain, and sometimes the little elephant.

And something worth highlighting is that, so far, this is a series that stands entirely on its own, without appearances from old characters that might stir excitement among us fans. Not that this is a problem, but we must appreciate the fact that the series thrives on its script, completely independent of the larger universe of Star Wars.

This week's episode was yet another fun ride on a new planet. Seeing the creators imaginations run amuck was a treat especially with the various species seen.

Myung Joh Wesner steps into the series with the first of two episodes she wrote, and I thought she did great. I love the sprinkles of humor throughout. You begin to see the fatigue of adventure set in with the kids and the longing to "just get home". We get some slight reveals for At Attin, the ship and its history, and maybe see Jod's true colors finally come out. Wim's character particularly has a nice arc as well.

It was a fun, suspenseful episode that leaves me craving the next episode.

Skeleton Crew, like many streaming shows, has taken its merry time to get somewhere interesting and it arrives here in this episode thanks to an interesting finish.

The Goonies and Indiana Jones tributes could not be more central, but the focus on the characters played by Jude Law and Nick Frost is what holds the most interest. I cannot give details without spoiling but it's safe to say that it makes you want to find out what happens next.

I enjoyed the cameos of Julie Ann Emery and in particular Kelly McDonald, who looks and plays the part perfectly.

Visually it is excellent like most episodes, but this one includes strong art design reminiscent of 80s Amblin.

Last weeks episode had weird pacing issues, but this week that is completely gone. I checked, and yes it is another director. Here we get great pace, intense events, some character development and another interesting planet. But best is the humour. I was laughing out loud several times. Very entertaining episode with a lot of fun. By far the most fun episode. And then we of course also had the ending... wow...

You were looking for Goonies in Space? Well, this is definitely that.

If I am forced to say something negative I would say that the linear storytelling i.e. Do the thing to get to B, do another thing to get to C, feels a bit too much like we are playing a game. But since the "game" is fun, who cares.

9/10. Best episode of the show, and I cannot wait to see more. I am actually excited about Disney Star Wars... who would have ever thought...
