Secrets of a Wallaby Boy

I like to give credit where credit is due as I imagine a lot of time, energy and money is spent in making a film. I was going to give up watching after 10 minutes but decided to stick with it to the end, thinking it might improve; it didn't ! The concept was interesting, the acting wasn't too bad (especially the lead character) but the film as a whole was dire with one badly thought through and stretched out scenario after another. The scene showing the lead trying to ride a bike was especially cringeworthy. A brave attempt at humour but sadly this failed to make me smile, let alone laugh. On a positive note, it was great to see a familiar face amongst a cast of unknowns which gave it some kudos. Who knows, this might become a cult classic?

This film is dire. I had to force myself to watch to the end in disbelief that it was so bad and must improve at some point. But it didn't. The 'Wallaby Boyx, Brandon McCaffrey couldn't act his way out of a paper bag and had no charisma. The plot, when you can discover it is almost non existent and not remotely funny. If you count a prolongued(and I mean p-r-l-o-n-g-u-e-d scene where he is trying to learn to ride a bike but keeps falling off as funny, then this is the movie for you.

Why Mark Bento has lent his name to this film is beyond me. He must need the money is all I can think to apply.

I loved Secrets of a Wallaby Boy! It's a delightful homage to the 1970s "Confessions of a" films with a modern twist. There's gentle humour along with some more bawdy scenes, but nothing ever gets too much. Anyone who likes the Carry On or Confessions films will see the references throughout the film. The plot also takes a Black Mirror turn as the film progresses and has some satire about the gig economy. There's lots of positive representation too, but the film never tries to force a message on you. I think everyone who likes a comedy that never takes itself too seriously will enjoy Secrets of a Wallaby Boy. Sit down with some friends, open a bottle or two, and enjoy!
